What's your pet peeve when it comes to tropes? What bothers you when you see it in a show or a movie?
  • whotookkarl whotookkarl Now 100%

Talking head montages, especially at the beginning of a movie or TV show. I think directors try to ground some fiction in reality by having a bunch of news reporters comment on some event but as someone who tries to avoid that garbage it just feels like the movie is made for someone else and it's been used so many times it's irritating.

Also product placement seeing a soda can or car perfectly framed to see the brand name or logo cheapens any sense of artistic integrity and feels like watching an advertisement.

And if I can indulge in a meta trope of streaming service monetization since it's become so common these days having a subscription + ad tier. Sub no ads or ads no sub, mixing them is the same greed as cable TV and shouldn't be supported by subscribing (Disney, HBO Max, prime, Netflix, etc).

Not even worth putting the time into writing why his opinion is based on imagined idiocy and not historic fact thinking the liberals and communists were aligned after WW2 at the start of the cold war and the Warsaw pact and NATO squaring off or Patton was assassinated, just a grand display of the best and brightest moron Minnesota conservatives have to offer.

You can't just make and sell cars as a superior mode of transportation and propose policy that effectively is net zero horses as human and cargo transport. Think of all the ferriers, oat farmers, and veterinarians that would put out of a job.

Delisted content should automatically be considered public commons/public domain. Also fuck Disney for bankrolling trade organizations lobbying copyright into the ground with 100+ years bs, there's no good argument for copyright over 5 years.

Faith is belief without evidence, and I have evidence everyone who has lived so far has died and the rest of us have enough in common that would cause us to die for similar reasons as those already dead. I don't need faith to believe we're all going to die, faith would be needed to believe someone won't die because we have no convincing evidence for any immortals yet.

It's not just about emotional states, which we can observe the behavioral states of but don't know what it is like to experience as other animals. It's about experience and consciousness which I think speaks to the underlying question of when other animals experience an emotional state if we can relate it to our own phenomenology for similar appearing states.

Just trying to live with as little advertising as possible and curious what tips or tricks the community has aside from moving out to a cabin in the woods. I can't really get away from road side advertising for now. Public sporting events are completely infected, and for the ads I am forced to see I try to make a conscious effort not to buy their goods or services. I won't subscribe to a streaming service if they have a sub+ad tier, if they're separate free with ads or sub no ads I'll support it. Not really for any moral stance, but ad blockers are good at avoiding malware and some services are basically broken if you have to wait for an ad network, and I just feel mentally healthier in general without the extra propaganda.
