Ask Lemmy

I was thinking today about how I've been very pleased with my most recent set of work boots today and thought it could be interesting if anyone else had any particular favorite clothing items that they have really been enjoying. Clothes are a very personal choice, as we're all built differently and do different things, but I'm curious to see if any trends show up in what we like. I got the Keen Braddock Low Tops almost a year ago. I had a previous pair of Keen's imported boots a while back, and my new job makes us go through their provider instead of me getting reimbursed for buying my own boot of choice, and I wasn't thrilled with the idea of buying safety toes without getting to try them on first, as some can be pretty uncomfortable. I saw they had the US made Braddock though, which I had been wanting to try to see if it was an upgrade from the now discontinued boots I had from them. I like Keen's because my old ones held up tremendously well. The thick rubber toe may look a little odd, but it doesn't scuff up like a leather cap boot, and it's asymmetrical so it fits my big foot better than many safety toes where both caps are the same shape. They feel very sneaker like, which is nice since my feet don't need serious protection from a super stiff and tall boot. I like the design is enough to be interesting, but nothing too wild. These have been holding up very well, though I have 3 pairs in my rotation now, I also have a pair of leather CAT steel toe low tops and a pair of Carhartt composite toe fabric low tops. They each have their ups and downs, but the Keen is my all-arounder. It's not as light as the comp toe, it's a little bulkier than the leather boot, but it's the most comfy and feels to be the best built of the 3. Edit: Just noticed the rules say the post needs to end with a question mark... What is your favorite clothing item and why?

This happened to me recently, there’s a group of people confusing me for a humanitarian artist because I stood up for her in front of the wrong people, and now I notice my copyrights/trademarks are intertwined with hers because the misconception is socially innate.

I swear, I get the vibe from my cats that - they're my daughters - one i get the vibe from that she's my old lady (which literally she is but the wife connotation is highly questionable) What is the relationship in the felid mind? I've never gotten the sense that I'm a "master" despite the fact they know when I get annoyed with them or what is forbidden and they mostly come to honor that (turns out nobody or anything likes getting hassled)

Mine have built a decent number of very small scratches and they're getting annoying so I'd like to get rid if at all possible. I've seen various things suggested including: - lens scratch repair kit (reviews don't look great on amazon) - baking soda paste - non-abrasive toothpaste - furniture polish (temporarily fills in the scratch from what I can tell) I'm reluctant to try any of them without some first hand accounts. No lens coating on these so no worries there. Thank you in advance! edit: I just want to say thanks very much to everyone. I ended up getting my prescription emailed to me and buying a new pair for €17 (about $19 USD) delivered on a site that one helpful poster linked. Looks like they will take about 3 weeks to get here so I'll put up with the scratchy ones until they get here. When they do arrive I will take some pictures and test the various methods I found online then post up what works and what wrecks the lenses.

Hello Internet, I have trouble with any underwear I ever owned. I am wearing XXL or size 8 underwear but they tend to make me uncomfortable in different matters. Waering loose Boxershorts is okay to my wiener but my balls are to free. Also they tend to crawl upwards during the day. Tighter Shorts have a good appearance and are my main underwear. But I struggle with them as well: My thing turtles uncomfortably making me insane so I can pull it into position. Also, they tend to screw at the bottom after half an year. Asking this within my circles only earns sarcastic comments or the experience isn't shared. So I ask you: How do I determine the correct underwear for me and am I missing something? If you relate and have solved this issue, please recommend me some underwear. // Edit: Thank you for all the recommendations and input. I wasn't aware of the pouch feature. Researched all suggested brands and: Ordered from overseas: * SAXX * BN3TH Currently not deliverable: * Step One Lululemon does have a store in the city, so I will go there next week to try those on.

Modulation / key changes have been used in music for ages but the style I'm talking about is the distinctive last verse (or chorus) sudden key change up to power through to the end. Seems to have come about sometime in the 60s/70s and was everywhere in the 80s onwards. Examples: Heaven is a place on earth - Belinda Carlisle I will always love you - Whitney Houston But who popularised it? What was the first big song to do it and set the style for the genre?

CBS refusing to fact check was a travesty, but at least they still called Vance out on the immigrant bullshit.

I've mostly been to forums that favor the latter format so that's what I'm used to (and why I [made a group for it](https://lemm.ee/c/megathreads) that is looking for participants, it's like making more flexible communities within communities, a federation inception), but I was wondering where you would draw the line.

I'm really looking for what may have been the driving motivation and reward. The focus is on your personal drive for the interest and what you gained from it. We can't have meaningful conversations if people are scared to be honest, so please be authentic, forthcoming, and respectful. Conversely, please respond to others with compassion so that users feel safe enough to be vulnerable.

I personally don't think it matters much at all, except in channels that specifically identify that way. However, I am male, hetero, cis, so its possible I'm just clueless.

I found this aftershave I'd been looking for on Belgian Amazon (amazon.com.be) - they dont sell the same kind in the US anymore but it's apparently still available overseas. I was going to see about having some shipped to me in the US and couldn't figure out any way to do so. I know the US Amazon site has this AmazonGlobal program where people from dozens of countries can order from the US site and have it shipped to them but apparently the non-US sites dont have a similar service available. Am I missing something?

For an example: I had an issue with always being in a food-scarce state, where I basically needed to hit the grocery store everyday buying overpriced under-portioned stuff and spending a fortune to have basically nothing in the cupboards and fridge or being depressed I had no supplies and just ordering food. I broke down and decided I needed to get and start using my Costco membership and that I could have whatever I wanted as long as I put every item down in a spreadsheet type doc and came up with a rough estimate for how many of each I needed each month and factored tax i to the multiplyer so I could adjust and always have the total cost for everything that would be my groceries. But I took it even further and now every subscription, bill, discretionary and vices, and more expensive longer-term items all get roughly budgeted for based on their lifecycle. So an annual subscription I anticipate keeping gets saved for out of each paycheck, something that lasts 2 months gets amortized over 4 paychecks generally. Everything is overbudgeted and real liberal so even if I don't have that expense that month or ever and its out of date, I still end up benefitting by saving for it and now I anticipate slowly transitioning all my monthly subs I cant yet afford annual and paying more for towards once a year with a discount and it not littering my records with the need for monthly entries. Now all my accounts except savings $0 out at the end exactly each month so it will be immediately obvious what the surplus is and what I am able to save, and also leverage that towards further optimizations as the opportunity arises. Its like a complete paradigm shift for me and I think I've stumbled on to my new groove haha. Its also forced me to be realistic and realize I can't save money when I'm not planning for the actual human needs and factors involved. Savings cannot be an the expense of my physical and material well-being, I will not tolerate that long term without sabatoging myself [Knock-on benefits] - budget for expensive bag of catfood per month and cat litter but won't go through nearly that much so that can become an adhoc cat medical insurance/vet visit/medical and supply fund + my emergency medical fund 😅 - can subtly tweak the quantities to allow accumulation of supplies without severe effect or detriment of the general budget. It will almost certainly be covered by other items not requiring replenishment - since larger over-time expenses rarely overlap, can use the savings to apply to pressing needs or unexpected emergencies without ever really having an impact since they will have been covered several times over by redundancies created by savings for other expenses that are similarly ongoing

I saw that other post about worst dates and honestly can't relate since I've never dated anyone, I just wanted to know if I was the only one here. That's it, you don't have to go deeper if you don't want to

I've heard very good things about high-EPA/decent DHA fish oil thats molecularly-distilled. This seems to be a frequent recommendation (particularly if you don't eat seafood or fish) in many health circles and I'd like to get everyone's thoughts on best products, practices, etc.

^This is a continuation of my series on emotions and self-knowledge^ > **Anxiety** *Anxiety is the dread over expected harmful events. From an evolutionary perspective, increased anxiety serves to increase vigilance to potential threats in the environment as well as increase the tendency to take proactive actions regarding such possible threats. The body often mobilises itself to meet the perceived threat: Muscles become tense, breathing is faster, and the heart beats more rapidly.*

The method of loci (MOL)/memory palaces are a widely known mnemonic devices and enable memory artists impressive tasks (like memorizing several decks of cards, memorizing numbers etc.). Further MOL is featured in pop culture e.g. Sherlock Holmes, Hannibal Lector etc... There is, to the best of my knowledge quite some research, which shows that MOL is working/useful for improved retention, especially when combined with spaced repetition. It seems I have never seem real world examples of long term memory palaces/method of loci applications. It always seems like a short term crutch for cards, numbers, speeches, grocery lists, phone numbers, vocabulary or for test/exam preparation. For example it seems that in language learning, the MOL is for encoding some vocabulary and visiting it regularly, until it is committed to long term memory. All examples I find in books about the method of loci are again only about having one location, a route of 10-N stations, and never about building/using mnemonic devices to organize bigger amounts of knowledge. Are there any examples of people using the method of loci/memory palaces to organize for example their professional knowledge? Or of polyglots having/keeping memory palaces for language learning? Is there any research about long term usage of the method of loci?

I'd like to do a series on 56 different emotions which we'll eventually get through as time permits. > **Anger** *Anger is an intense emotion defined as a perceived provocation, the invasion of one's boundaries, or a threat. From an evolutionary standpoint, anger serves to mobilize psychological resources in order to address the threat/invasion. Anger is directed at an individual of equal status.* Try to keep it fresh by what is current but its also cool to retrospect
