**_Populist leader alleged to have ‘copied word for word’ a monologue by TV show’s fictional president Jed Bartlet_** Argentina’s rightwing populist president, Javier Milei, has been accused of plagiarising a chunk of his recent speech to the United Nations general assembly from the political drama The West Wing. “It seems like fiction, but it isn’t,” the left-leaning Buenos Aires newspaper Página 12 [reported](https://www.pagina12.com.ar/772291-parece-ficcion-pero-no-lo-es-milei-plagio-su-discurso-en-la-) on Friday, claiming Milei had “copied, word for word, a monologue” by the television show’s fictional president, Josiah “Jed” Bartlet. Suspicions over Milei’s address surfaced this week when the political columnist Carlos Pagni [flagged](https://www.lanacion.com.ar/politica/nuevos-reclamos-nuevos-sujetos-otra-indignacion-nid02102024/) the “extraordinary” similarities between part of the president’s speech and words uttered by Martin Sheen’s Bartlet 21 years earlier. “Didn’t anyone else notice?” Pagni wrote in the newspaper La Nación, before transcribing the words of both men.

> In [a devastating letter](https://www.gazahealthcareletters.org/usa-letter-oct-2-2024) sent to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris this week, 99 health workers who have volunteered in Gaza amid the genocide wrote that Israel has likely already killed over 118,908 Palestinians in Gaza. This is approximately 5.4 percent of Gaza’s population, meaning Israel has killed 1 of every 20 Palestinians in the Strip in less than a year, according to this estimate. > Not only is this figure horrific, it is also the “most conservative estimate” possible of the true death toll in Gaza, the health workers wrote in an appendix to the letter. The workers [calculated this](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/66e083452b3cbf4bbd719aa2/t/66fcd754b472610b6335d66f/1727846228615/Appendix+20241002.pdf) based on estimates from food insecurity researchers on the death toll caused by famine; rough estimates of deaths by disease; and other estimates of deaths that Gaza health officials are unable to count. > The workers, who spent a combined 254 weeks in Gaza, specifically emphasize the impact that Israel’s genocide has had on children. For instance, they point out that, according to officially reported figures, Israel has killed at least 2,100 babies and toddlers since October 7 — a toll that is higher than the combined Israeli death toll from the First Intifada, the Second Intifada and October 7 attack.

**In short:**  X (formerly Twitter) has unsuccessfully challenged Australia's eSafety Commissioner's fine for allegedly failing to respond to questions about harmful content on its platform, particularly child sexual abuse material. The organisation argued Twitter stopped being a company when it merged with X Corp and any penalty process would need to be restarted. **What's next?**  X Corp will have to pay the fine and the commissioner's court costs.

> As Israel’s military escalates its attacks on Lebanon, it has continued its relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip, where almost a year of war has now wiped 902 entire Palestinian families off the civil registry. > There are another 1,300 families where only one family member has survived. The official death toll in Gaza has reached nearly 41,800, but that is believed to be a vast undercount. > Gaza-based journalist Akram al-Satarri says one year into Israel’s war, the medical and humanitarian crisis remains unchanged. He describes some of the horrific injuries suffered by Palestinians, including many children, that have resulted in mass amputation of limbs, and says people are in a constant struggle for shelter and safety. > “The suffering is continuous, and now the war in Lebanon is adding further burdens on the Palestinians and is giving more space for the Israeli forces to continue the bombardment in different areas,” says al-Satarri.

> Researchers have used commercial satellite imagery to identify more than 30 points where Iranian missiles appear to have impacted an air base in southern Israel. > Based on preliminary calculations of what happened at Nevatim, Lewis believes a substantial number of Iranian missiles may have reached their targets. > Lewis notes that although over 30 missiles landed inside the base perimeter, the damage caused was still somewhat limited. That's notable because Iran is believed to have used some of its most advanced Fattah missiles.

The Indian government has opposed petitions in the top court that seek criminalisation of marital rape, saying it would be "excessively harsh". The federal home ministry told the Supreme Court that "a man does not have a fundamental right" to force sex on his wife, but there were enough laws to protect married women against sexual violence. The top court is hearing petitions **seeking to amend a British-era law that says a man cannot be prosecuted for rape within marriage**. Violence within marriage is rampant in India - according to a recent government survey, one in 25 women have faced sexual violence from their husbands.

> Israeli forces killed 28 health care workers in Lebanon in just the past day, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in [a press briefing](https://www.who.int/director-general/speeches/detail/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing---3-october-2024) on Thursday. So far, Israeli forces have killed 1,600 people, including over 100 children, in the past two weeks in Lebanon. >Israel has openly adopted attacks on health care as a military practice in its genocide in Gaza — one of many tactics that seemingly violate international wartime law that Israel is now using on Lebanon. > Israel is carrying out intense shelling in Lebanon, [killing nearly the same number](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/10/02/israeli-strikes-lebanon-deadliest/) of people in Lebanon in just 10 days as were killed in [the 2006 Lebanon war](https://www.britannica.com/event/2006-Lebanon-War), > Israel’s violence is also causing a major displacement crisis. **_French president tells fellow European leaders the bloc is falling behind the US and China because of over-regulation and under-investment_** The EU “could die” unless it makes itself more competitive with the US and China, Emmanuel Macron has warned. The French president said the bloc was over-regulating and under-investing at the Berlin Global Dialogue event. Washington and Beijing both outstripped the EU in economic output and investment, he said, before calling on the bloc to complete its banking union package of financial rules. Member states also needed to press for global trade rules to be kept fair, he added, according to Bloomberg.

This is merely a bullet point on the main article, but seems more-significant to me than the article's main title, and has now been cited on a number of other news sites: >Iranian source tells Al Jazeera Iran sent a message to the US via Qatar saying that it does not seek regional war but adding that “the phase of unilateral self-restraint has ended”. It also warned any Israeli attack would be met with an “unconventional response” that includes targeting Israeli infrastructure.

A 21-year-old woman kidnapped by Islamic State militants in Iraq more than a decade ago has been freed from Gaza in an operation led by the US. The operation this week also involved Israel, Jordan and Iraq, according to officials. The woman is a member of the Yazidi religious minority, which saw more than 5,000 members killed and thousands more kidnapped in a 2014 campaign that the UN has said constituted genocide. Silwan Sinjaree, the chief of staff of Iraq’s foreign minister, said she was freed after more than four months of efforts including several attempts that failed because of the difficult security situation resulting from Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. _An Afghan woman's gender and nationality can suffice as proof of persecution **to receive asylum status**, the European Court of Justice has said. The ruling came after Austria rejected refugee status for two Afghan women._ The [European Court of Justice (ECJ)](https://www.dw.com/en/european-court-of-justice-ecj/t-45002262), the highest court in the EU, ruled on Friday that women in [Afghanistan](https://www.dw.com/en/afghanistan/t-18932080) are subjected  to persecution by the Taliban. The [ruling](https://curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/docs/application/pdf/2024-10/cp240167en.pdf "External link — ruling") said that certain discriminatory measures adopted by the Taliban constitute "acts of persecution," citing forced marriage and lack of protection against gender-based violence. As such, the court sided with two Afghan women in Austria who had argued their [status as women under the Taliban](https://www.dw.com/en/how-talibans-new-rules-further-silence-women-in-afghanistan/a-70054470) regime justified receiving refugee status.

*Israel seems ready to respond in a much more forceful and public way with Iran after Tehran launched its second massive missile attack on Israel this year, analysts and officials say.* After Israel invaded Lebanon to confront Iran’s strongest ally, Hezbollah, and Iran’s second massive missile attack on Israel in less than six months, Israel seems ready to strike Iran directly, in a much more forceful and public way than it ever has, and Iran has warned of massive retaliation if it does. “We are in a different story right now,” said Yoel Guzansky, a former senior security official who oversaw Iran strategy on Israel’s National Security Council. “We have a consensus in Israel — among the military, the defense experts, analysts and politicians — that Israel should respond in force to Iran’s attack.” To many Israelis, there is now little to lose: Iran’s efforts to strike the urban sprawl around Tel Aviv crossed a threshold that Tehran has never previously breached, even during its earlier missile attack in April, which targeted air bases but not civilian areas. The huge asteroid that hit Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago was not alone, scientists have confirmed. A second, smaller space rock smashed into the sea off the coast of West Africa creating a large crater during the same era. It would have been a “catastrophic event”, the scientists say, causing a tsunami at least 800m high to tear across the Atlantic ocean. Dr Uisdean Nicholson from Heriot-Watt University first found the Nadir crater in 2022, but a cloud of uncertainty hung over how it was really formed.

The new figure would make the assault, in which civilians were shot dead as they dug trenches to defend the remote town of Barsalogho, **one of the deadliest single attacks in Africa in recent decades**.
