I guess I didn't read the code well enough, but I was expecting addr to point to somewhere on the stack.

I guess that's something to try - declare and assign a variable and then print the address of it, and then use that to take a look at stack memory.

The book is from 1996, and there's a decent chance that the screenshot was made on an older OS that does not have the same memory protection features as a modern OS would have.

Try a few of the following and see if they segfault:

• Read only as much memory as the size of the pointer addr
• Offset the value of addr by -64 and read 64 from there
• Do the same but with smaller values

You're limited on UX when it comes to PWAs. For tools where this matters a lot, PWAs are a non-starter.

Iceland runs plenty of these and has a nice culture of frequenting the public bathhouse. It's one of the few things you can do that is actually affordable there.

They do have the advantage of having essentially infinite clean energy in the form of geothermal heat. As do Japan in many cases, for that matter. I'm sure that has something to do with these institutions having staying power there.

Anyway, I think this idea has merits, but not as an energy saving measure. The reason for this is that in order to maintain good water quality, you have to shower thoroughly before getting into the bath, negating the potential energy benefits of the initiative. We can bring it back for it being nice, though!

Running a thermostat 15-30 minutes before the hot water is needed would only consume electricity if the water is not already hot. You probably want a well insulated accumulator tank with one of these systems to not lose the energy produced as well.

So I actually have experience with these in the north of Sweden - they are definitely more efficient in summer, but do provide some amount of hot water as well in winter on days with clear sky (of which there are few).

On the topic of using this for heating in the Mediterranean - I don't think that's where you want to invest, installing underfloor heating in one of those houses. That will cost some serious money. It's probably wiser to spend it making the home less prone to get cold/hot using insulation in that case. I will admit to being out of my depth when it comes to optimizing buildings for hot climates though

Wouldn't places with good conditions for solar heating generally not need the underfloor heating for the season when the solar heating is most effective?

This has been my impression, and why solar heating is most useful for heating water.
