I realize this isn’t exactly piracy per-se, but does subscribing through a VPN to Turkey work? Has anyone had their accounts terminated for this? There’s something to be said about paying _something_ and not having to worry about updating and keeping the patches up to date. It’s like $83 USD annually for all apps if it does work, and I’d be good with it for that price.

IRC really needs a discord styled client.

Something where if you drop an image or video onto it, it’ll automatically upload it to a private imgur link and share it.

If you want to share a larger file, maybe it uploads to wetransfer or something automatically.

Discord is basically IRC and more, but it’s also easier for non-techies to join a discord server, and you have a common identity across all servers.

The beauty of something open like IRC though is the fact that you can make and use any client you want, including an old C64 if you really wanted to… with additional adapters of course

For ethical piracy, I would say definitely if the content is no longer available through official channels.

    Other situations include:

    • downloading a copy of equal quality to one you already have a physical copy of, but don’t have the equipment to rip it
    • really old stuff that should be public domain, but isn’t because copyright law is broken
    • downloading the cracked copy of a game because DRM in your purchased copy makes it unusable

I personally avoid DRM protected digital purchases unless I can strip it out. I prefer ripping movies myself, but I don’t have any issues buying DRM-free music. I also wouldn’t mind paying for a kindle book given that I can always import it into Calibre and end up with a DRM-free copy.

This is how the case works.

With the ad supported kindle, there would be another screen showing the ad before you could use it.

Not a huge deal, but it does get a little annoying

It basically prevents you from being able to use the feature of the case

The ads were a lot less noticeable on the older kindles with the keyboard

With my ad-free paper white, there’s a magnet in the case that lines up with a sensor in the kindle.

You open the cover, and it’s right where you left off.

With the ad supported version, you’d open the cover, and have to push the button to dismiss the ad.

IIRC, that behavior still persists even if the ads expire.

Also, buy the ad-supported version from a place other than Amazon, and tell Amazon you got it as a gift and would like to remove the ads.

There’s a non-zero chance the customer service will remove it free of charge because I don’t think it’s possible for someone to pay to remove the ads if it wasn’t purchased from Amazon directly.

Unless the communities you visit move, it’d be very difficult to move entirely.

    This applies to discord especially.

They’re more of a compliment to the other social networks in many cases

There's nothing wrong with using Reddit, Twitter, and other mainstream site still while being active on fediverse.

Reddit does still have the advantage of being highly indexed by search engines.

A Lemmy instance on the other hand probably wouldn’t have that same benefit.

How often do people search for “how to [insert thing here]. Reddit” to find a worthwhile source of info that isn’t clickbait?

The product is already tethered to the battery pack, so it’s not that far of a stretch to imagine maybe a $500 version that is dependent on an iPhone or something.

Vision pro is a full computer, vision air might be a glorified display for a separate computer.

Trying to find a community for a popular topic isn’t the easiest in the world… it’s a bit like the old days where you had to find a good forum for the topic you wanted to chat about.

I think they’ll drop the price considerably to get users and developers onboard.

To really get the average consumer, it’ll need to be around the price of a MacBook. If they can do that, it’ll sell boatloads.

Although, if they really care about gaming, it’ll need a VR controller, not just a gamepad

The funny thing is, they use the same ingredients for the photos… but they very selectively position and melt/toast everything

The employee making your burger isn’t going to care if the cheese isn’t perfectly positioned, or that the burger patties aren’t perfectly charred.

The whole federation thing is confusing though…

Client selection on iOS is quite limited too. I’d love if there was an Apollo-like Lemmy client complete with all the gestures and seamless Imgur upload.

But even then, trying to find a community is challenging because of the decentralized nature of it

There’s potential for sure, but I can’t see it taking off with the general public in the current state
