I have the same problem even after unchecking read posts. Of course, it's a bug either way. In the meantime I just always click the save post button so my posts show up there instead.

The real reason was that Gollum couldn't fly. If they flew there, Frodo would have claimed the ring and that would be that.

The explanation for why Gandalf chose not to fly is up for question, but ultimately irrelevant.

Well, I just made hobbit.world and intend to only have Tolkien related communities there. So block away if that's not your thing. However, the only way to block an instance is to defederate and that's kind of harsh. Hopefully the feature of blocking communities by instance is added.

    What makes acrylic paint smooth?

I'm experimenting with paints. I've found that Golden heavy body paints are thick and useful for texture. But, liquitex soft body paints feel practically like ink in that I can easily draw lines using a liner brush. Just adding water to the thick paint doesn't achieve the same thing. Is there some sort of material I can add to thick paint to achieve the same effect so I don't need to stock up on multiple types of every color?

This sort of stuff is crucial and needs to be built in.

Most instances are one user's whim away from going away. This isn't a problem as long as clients back things up and migration is easy. But, that doesn't happen right now.

Guarantee we'll see some big news at points in the future when a big instance goes down because the owner died or just lost interest.

Again, these are easily overcome, but they are issues right now.

Actually, clicking those links actually works! Hooray!

I was under the impression that you were supposed to be able to search for "!hobbit_art@hobbit.world" in the community search bar and find things there. Now that I know it works, I've found that simply modifying the community url also works. So going to: https://lemmy.world/c/hobbit_art@hobbit.world actually jumps me right to it.

So, looks like it was already working. Thanks!

  • Everything works great there locally, but I can't subscribe to communities on other instances and can't see my instance from lemmy.world. I see no setting for this in the console other than "Federation enabled" which is enabled, and allowed and blocked instances. I added lemmy.world to allowed. For example: !hobbit_art@hobbit.world (If it matters, I have new user accounts disabled until I figure things out.)

Awesome! I was hoping this would be possible. I plan to host my own instance hobbit.world and would need to migrate everything.

Also, I'll defederate any corporate instances. No need to encourage bad actors.

Cable cost well over $100 a month many years ago when I cancelled it. And 1/3 of the content is commercials.

Pretty sure you could subscribe to every major streaming service for less than that. And as long as you avoid Hulu, you won't see commercials.

Things are WAY better now, even though it was better a little while ago when there was just Netflix.

  • This cutaway demonstration Curta is by far the most expensive collectible I've ever purchased.

The Curta calculator is a marvel of engineering made by a guy who developed it while imprisoned by Nazis.

You specify numbers on the side and spin the handle up top to add them. You multiply numbers by specifying one number on the side then spinning the handle and rotating the collar.

Hard to describe via text. But there are lots of YouTube videos about it.

This particular model is special because it's a cutaway model meant for demonstrating how it works internally. It's a rare version of an already rare calculator and I absolutely love it.

The Curta feels so tactile in the way it works. You can feel the numbers being added when you rotate the handle and feel the zip of the mechanical parts interacting.

It starts a little slow as Boromir makes his journey, but things pick up later as more people start moving around. If nothing else, I learned a ton about what was actually going on. Kind of crazy how much Gandalf moves around throughout the whole thing. Eru really should have given him wings.

The same science has happened in two places at once before. Lots of people rush to publish to avoid getting scooped.

Religion is just fiction, so this has not happened there. Heck, Joseph Smith couldn't even invent his religion twice without messing things up.

Maybe not precisely the same as the quote, but it's pretty similar. If there was a true religion, you'd expect it to have happened many times identically all over the world.

I've tried Jerboa and Connect. They are ok, but there are features I'd like. Biggest feature is account backup and transfer. If I switch Lemmy instances, I don't want to have to sub and block all the same channels and people. Heck, maybe keep two accounts always in sync, just in case my initial instance goes down. Instance blocking. Basically individual defederation by hiding posts and users in the client. Blocking all subs of a name regardless of instance. If I don't want to see a sub about Foo on one instance, I probably don't want it anywhere. Keyword blocking. There are public figures I am tired of. Don't need to see any post about them. (Connect actually has this, although I haven't tested it yet). Really easy channel blocking. Just swipe and it's blocked.

If I want to join a bunch of related channels together, is there a way to do that like multireddits? I think that will become more important as the number of channels proliferates.

I have tinnitus and could never stand CRT whine. But I'd like to get one for classic gaming if there was such a thing as a silent crt.

I have found that painting fluffy white clouds or shadows or gradients is highly dependent on brush type, type of paint, how dry the paint on the brush is, how dry the paint on the canvas is, etc. I am trying to figure out how to do this consistently. Is there a type of paint best for this? Maybe one that is chalkier somehow compared to most paints that are heavy bodied?
