Lurk a specific instance?

I can understand de-federating from something like lemmygrad.ml. I can't for the life of me understand lemmy.world or sh.itjust.works (love the name btw). Both instances just seem to be filled with regular, moderate people?

  • With beehaw de-federating from lemmy.world (and seemingly most of the fediverse and this point), myself and many others no longer have a way to even lurk beehaw. Coupled with the fact that beehaw seems to gate-keep their registration, I'm wondering if there's a way to at least lurk their instance without needing an account. I know it can be done via their website. Is that something Jerboa supports as well?

Regardless of the current situation, I think the option in general to "unsubscribe" from an entire instance could be useful. I know we can create our own instances and defederate, but not everyone has the skills, money, etc. to be able to do that.

    Unfortunately :/

I get about 2-3 of these fake follow requests per day in the official Reddit app.

I had the official app installed alongside Sync. Finally deleted the official app today.

I find it ironic how they claim about not being profitable. How many millions of dollars did they spend on various developers salaries to build this unwanted feature?

One thing that definitely worries me with federation in general is the barrier to entry to hosting an instance is low, by design. On one hand this is great, but on the other hand it means just about anyone can spin up an instance and collect usernames, passwords, emails, etc. from anyone who signs up

I know this is obviously no better than an single giant corporation who can do that. But it's interesting to think about.

I'm definitely not suggesting kbin.social is doing this by the way. Your post just spurred this thought for me

I had the same experience. My desk is next to my window and it felt like I was breathing in sand, even with my air filter.

Hopefully a once in a lifetime experience 😅

As someone who's been looking for a reddit alternative for a while and occasionally read Hacker News, I must say I really like it here on Lemmy. Similar simplicity of Hacker News, but with more diverse set of communities.

With all due respect and empathy to reddit's employees who do deserve gainful employment:

Does a link aggregator really need a huge labor pool? In terms of functionality Lemmy is already on par with how I remember Reddit 10 years ago (compared to which the experience of Reddit today is actually worse). And Lemmy achieves it with what, an extreme fraction of the labor cost?

Props to all the devs, admins, etc who are hosting all these Lemmy instances for us, btw :)

    Fair enough.

Although does this create a separate problem where every instance you sign up to has your email address? Or is email option in most instances?

I wish there were a way to transfer/propagate a single identity across multiple instances. I would love to use a less crowded instance, but I don't want to keep creating new accounts.

Absolutely. Having grown up with MMOs in the early 2000s I honestly thought I needed to pick the biggest most active instance akin to chosing an active game server 😅

I'm glad to see a NYC community on Lemmy. I hope this community picks up steam as more people flee from Reddit

  • I'm having trouble subscribing to communities and I hope y'all can help. Apologies if this is a very basic question I'm using the Jerboa app. When I find a community I click the "Subscribe" button. What's weird is from there the button changed to "Pending" as opposed to "Subscribed". What's worse is the community does not show up in my subscribed communities in the Jerboa app, meaning I can't quickly navigate back to the community. Essentially seems like I'm still not subscribed at all. I'm very new to federated social media. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
