Hurricane in Florida. A work friend invited my mom and I to stay at her place if it got bad. I'd spent time with her and her husband before, and thought we would have a good time playing games and hanging out.
It started to get bad, so we headed over. She didn't answer the door or phone. Finally she comes out, says we woke her up (it's 3pm) and laughed at us getting "freaked out" by a little wind. Guess we were supposed to wait for the full hurricane force winds before driving across town. Spent the remainder of my birthday on the closet floor with mom and dog.

Exotic is relative, just like "foreign." What's foreign in one country is native in another. You made a great choice.

Acryllic on paper. Inspired by David Brin's novel The Postman. Solidly middle-of-the-road post-apocalyptic story. Better than the movie.
I've decided to play around with adding watercolor to some of these. Original photo found on [pexels](https://www.pexels.com/photo/silhouette-of-three-people-450062/).
[Recipe](https://veenaazmanov.com/pullman-sandwich-bread-pain-de-mie/comment-page-29/#comments). I've had the Pullman pan for at least 2 years, and finally used it. My first attempt with King Arthur's recipe was a fail. The dough didn't rise and only filled half the tin. This one came out beautifully. The only snag (literally) was that the dough baked into the crevice of the lid, and I couldn't get it off without tearing off a bit of corner. Over all, very happy with this rectangle.

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton is amazing, although the follow up isn't as good.
Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time is also amazing, though, again, the follow up isn't as good.
If singular books are OK, there's Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr by John Crowley.
I could give more titles because I love books from the animal perspective, but these are my sci-fi/fantasy recs. I also second Watership Down.

I'm not even going to try to type the name of this one. It's Estonia's contribution to this year's Eurovision and it makes me happy every time I hear it.
Apparently the chorus translates roughly to "Why no, officer, those are not our drugs."
[Original reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/52weeksofbaking/comments/1frjukh/week_40_intro_weekly_discussion_3d_shape/) Happy almost October folks! We are 3/4th of the way through this year already, can you believe it! Let's celebrate by baking something that challenges gravity - a 3D shaped object. You can use a pan that supports 3D cake shapes like these from Fat Daddio. Or you can use your ingenuity and engineering skills on anything from a book cake to a gingerbread house. Or maybe go all out and attempt a showstopper with a full biscuit scene or two. Do share the creative ideas you are considering this week!
[Recipe](https://www.craving-nomz.com/kimchi-cheese-sourdough-loaf/) I've been wanting to try Kimchi, but I am afraid of new foods. It's best if I try them in something I really like. This was the perfect introduction.

So those polled voters indicate what they want in a poll. Yet those same voters elect (choose) the politicians (their representatives who speak for them) who want something different.
By that logic, everyone who votes for Harris supports Israel's genocide against Palestine. Voters make the choice they feel is best out of what they're given.

Because understanding people's motivations is valuable in figuring out how to reach them. But I'm obviously fucking up the circle jerk.

Are you serious? Because they lie. And because they demonize the other side so hard, their base will vote for them no matter what. For example, polling shows most republican voters are not in favor of extreme abortion restrictions. They want abortion up to a certain point and for certain reasons. But when they're told the other side is murdering full-norn babies, they go for what seems to them like the lesser evil.

This is an example of why I think it's important to distinguish between politicians and voters when saying *Republicans want X." Because what they want or believe are often at odds. It would help if we could convince the voters of that.

If nothing else, my family. I don't have a good sense of the future or life goals, so I keep myself moving by setting small goals. Plans to bake something, working on a painting, just little things around the home.
[Original reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/52weeksofbaking/comments/1fn2n6w/week_39_intro_weekly_discussion_unfamiliar/) Another wide open challenge this week! Today's theme is all about exploring the unfamiliar (or the intimidating), so unleash your adventurous side, embrace the risk, and bake with something you've never used before. This could be a less common spice like cardamom or sumac, an alternative flour such as buckwheat or chickpea, or a unique fruit like persimmon or dragon fruit. Or you might consider a different sweetener like maple sugar or date syrup, or perhaps a floral element such as rosewater or orange blossom. This could also be an opportunity to explore ingredients for alternate diets - protein powder for high protein bakes, gluten free flour or vegan alternative to eggs. Good luck!
I picked this up at ART Burger Sushi Bar at Myrtle Beach. [Linda Weatherspoon](https://grandstrandmag.com/feature/portrait_of_a_survivor) has tons of paintings available there at really reasonable prices. Also the food was reasonably priced and delicious and the service was great.
Acryllic and ink on paper. Inspired by Fiona Davis' novel The Masterpiece. The book follows two timelines: - 1929 A woman teaches art at a time when women aren't respected, and Picasso is taking America by storm. - 1975 Another woman is dealing with shame and trauma involving a divorce and surprise mastectomy. She finds comfort and inspiration in a painting that turns out to be by the first woman. So obviously I did this in a Picasso style. After making the sketch, it felt like filling in a coloring book, which some people find meditative, but I just find tedious. I spent way too much time filling in a patterned background but it made the image too noisy, so I covered it with semi-transparent paint. I kind of like the result. I didn't want to outline in paint, so I cheated and used pen.
First time trying this one. Make sure you try to us the highlighted letter as may times as possible per word. Blossom Puzzle, September 20 Letters: A J K E R S T My score: 178 points My longest word: 8 letters
[Recipe](https://www.seriouseats.com/pommes-dauphine-recipe-5217321). Mashed potatoes mixed with choux dough and fried. Tasty.
[Original reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/52weeksofbaking/comments/1fib04t/intro_weekly_discussion_week_38_choux_pastry/) Welcome to another technical challenge - the Pâte à Choux... Pronounced "Shoe Pastry" (confusing when you hear it for the first time on an English baking show), choux means "cabbage" in French. Which should give you a rough idea of what your bakes should look like, especially if you go for the small round kinds. Like our other technical challenges, this is not a specific item but a baking technique. Choux pastry does not use a raising or leavening agent, instead it "employs its high moisture content to create steam, as the water in the dough evaporates when baked, puffing the pastry" (source : Wikipedia). Once you master the basic technique, you can use it to make various delicious recipes - sweet or savory, and maybe even come up with your own. For the basics, check out Sally's tutorial. Popular recipes include Éclairs, Gougeres (which are savory, cheesy Profiteroles) or Paris Brest. For a non-French, unorthodox take on the challenge - try some delicious churros.
