I had this argument with my girlfriend-now-wife. Her parents are dumbass chuds and they taught her that. They also taught her that taxes are complicated and should be done on April 14th

my company is going full steam ahead with AI stuff and a coworker (who is lebanese and we talk about palestine but he has jewish cabal conspiracy ) loves the promise (fantasy?) of AI, especially GenAI. This mfer uses it to summarize short articles and write his emails. I feel like I'm a crazy person because I enjoy reading stuff and writing too.
He sent me a demo yesterday where they had a local instance of an LLM trained on internal data and sure enough it was able to pull info from disparate sources and it was legit kinda neat. Most of what it did was chatbot stuff but with NLP and NLG. To me, this seems like really complicated way of having a search algorithm which we know to be more efficient and faster especially since it was just fetching info.
However it was only neat bc it was running on internal data with strict boundaries, also it belies that a massive, comprehensive data dictionary had to be made and populated by people to allow for these terms/attributes/dimensions to be linked together. One of the things it did in the demo was execute SQL based off of a question how many of these items on this date?
which it then provided as select sum(amount) from table where report_date = date
and it also provided graphs to show fluctuations in that data over time. I didn't validate the results but I would hope it wouldn't make stuff up especially since the training set was only internal. My experience with other AI apps is that you can ask the thing the same question and you'll get different results.

The 1099 income requires you to pay employment taxes so make sure you track your expenses as they pertain to your work and you may need to make quarterly tax payments on that income. W2 income should have all of the withholdings so you should be ok with that.
After you cover your expenses then you can put amounts for savings and investments like a Roth IRA ($6,500 max per year) and the rest of it can be “living” money with which you can do whatever you wish. The more automatic the savings is the better to reduce the friction of additional tasks.
There is no “good” bank unfortunately and while credit unions are preferred they have geographic and/or membership constraints. If you don’t deal with cash then you can just use an online bank like Schwab where you can manage your checking and investment accounts.
Going back to your budget you should get an accurate picture of your recurring expenses including rent, food, utilities, insurance, phone, etc. then put several months (3-6 months is the standard) worth of those expenses aside in a savings account. I would add more for potential tax liabilities.
You said $1200 for expenses without rent. With rent if the average is $2400 total per month, then you should set aside 3-6 times that amount: $7200 - 14400. Seems crazy at first especially since it mostly just sits there but it means you can basically make any vehicle repair, cover most minor medical emergencies, pay deductibles, even supplement income if you become unemployed. Think of it as self-insurance where you pay the premiums to yourself. The balance can be built up over time.
After that you can see what is remaining and plan accordingly. You’ll have to revisit your plan periodically to make sure you’re reaching your savings and mutual aid goals.

It depends on how long you need this money to last. When is your next gig and will it pay out at the same rate? Are you in the US? Is this 1099 or W2 income?
It’d be good to sketch out what your short, medium and long term financial goals are. If you have an accurate picture of your recurring expenses then the rest of it can be used to allocate to your goals depending on priorities.
Really strict budgets are hard to obey and can cause more stress so having a general awareness of your financial condition, i.e. approximate balances of accounts and transaction activity, is often good enough but ymmv

I've driven cars with the supplemental safety stuff like auto braking, radar/lidar cruise, 360 cameras, lane departure features, etc. and I actually think they are great, maybe not for everyone and for every scenario but these can help and can reduce risks. This existing tech is like autocorrect since it can guide, alert and preempt the driver but not control per se, FSD feels like gen AI where it will drive through a truck or a median and accelerate wildly bc it cannot parse what it is seeing but it will confidently do something

I remember reading or watching something that I can no longer find about how US public education creates a *false economy* for its students by its use of numeric grades which they accumulate throughout their schooling and how these grades are a kind of currency exchanged for being "good students." I don't know if "false economy" is the correct term though. The [wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_economy) says: > a false economy or hallucinated economy is an action that does save money at the beginning but which, over a longer period of time, results in more money being spent or wasted than being saved. But this is more about *economizing* as opposed to a broader concept of "fake" economy with a fake currency that incentivizes certain behaviors over others. Perhaps these are short-term over long-term behaviors (like in the wiki above) or that the grades can only measure limited aspects of students performance but are a reification of subjective performance into absolute worth or like [Goodhart's law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodhart%27s_law) the grades are a key performance indicator (KPI) and don't actually measure what they should be measuring. The topic itself isn't strictly about education and can applied more broadly. Does anyone know if there is a better term or if I'm off base and completely wrong?

CW: dairy and other potential animal products I didn't have prepackaged smoked tofu so I made a marinade with a little rice vinegar, soy sauce, olive oil and liquid smoke and let the extra firm tofu marinate in the fridge while I went for a jog (about 45 minutes). Next I heated up a cast iron skillet, added some butter (I didn't have vegan on hand today) and when that was nice and hot, I added thin slices of my marinated tofu and let it do it's thing. I sprinkled some montreal steak seasoning on top while it was cooking. Then I thinly sliced some red onion and toasted a couple of burger buns and slathered on some mayo. Once the tofu was done (this was a pure guess as I eyeballed literally everything about this) I scooped it onto the buns and topped with the onions. The video has cooked onions too but I only used raw and it was so fucking good. The result was so amazing and honestly incredibly easy and cheap. It tasted deli quality and took all of 15 minutes of prep and cooking for about 2 large / 4 normal portions for what was maybe $4 in ingredients.
