My wife and I are 31, no kids yet. We moved from a major city back to our home state and are struggling to make friends here. We keep an eye on meetup postings and Facebook events, stuff like that, no luck. We went to a local board game night and it was all elderly people. Nothing wrong with that but not exactly what we’re looking for. Where we lived before we attended a church we liked and met people there, but churches in our area are a lot different/more political than we’re used to. I guess eventually we’ll have kids and meet other parents, but how do we make friends now at this stage in our lives?

Not impossible, but I’ve failed thus far. Most people do. There aren’t a lot of exciting jobs in the world and a lot of people who want them.

The knowledge that I have to go to work for the rest of my life. Other people get to live remarkable lives, and I don’t. This is it. Forever.

Spider-Man: No Way Home. Mixing the different versions of the same character from different adaptations was a really cool, modern idea I don’t think could have been done without our Cinematic Universe/Superhero boom in recent years. I can’t think of an example of that from the past. There’s no James Bond team up movie or Hannibal Lecterverse or anything like that.

Unfortunately, I think it’s a really boring trick to see a second time, and now we’re going to have to see the same idea repeated in every superhero movie for years to come.

There are too many good stories to watch the same one again with a different look. Even if they do it well, I’d rather watch something else for the first time.

  • I haven’t seen any updates since the movie was announced and that was back in 2021. Now it looks like Jonah Hill is in hot water so I’m wondering if there’s any other info.

Dead and Company, LA, maybe 2019 or so? The band was playing Dark Star and for some reason Jeff started jamming a keyboard part that sounded like the melody to Carol of the Bells. Think the “ding fries are done” part if you were on the internet that long ago. John lit up and started harmonizing with him, so both are just full on playing Christmas tunes in the middle of Dark Star. Bobby then realized what was happening, became visibly furious, and ran across the stage to shut down the jam in its tracks. I’ve had a lot of different emotions at Dead shows but this was the only time I ever laughed like that. I’ll see if I can pin down what show it was and find a video. Any other fun stories like this?

What is your favorite older movie that could NEVER get made in this day and age?

It makes me feel old calling these older movies but male driven sex comedies like American Pie or Superbad seem to be extinct. The closest that comes out today are gender flip versions like Booksmart. I understand the need for a fresh take and the desire to avoid certain questionable aspects of the genre but it feels like there should still be a place for dude centric raunchy comedies.

I watched the show and then started reading the first book. From what I can tell so far a lot of the weird writing decisions that confused or annoyed me in the show are not present in the book, though there are other aspects of the show I liked a little bit more than the book like how some of the characters are portrayed.

Overall I’d say both versions are good with the book being slightly better. I would recommend the show whether you intend to read the book or not.
