Depends on your hardware and what driver you use. I have run Ubuntu on an old Macbook Pro with no change in connection speed. There are several drivers available for this particular card, each with its own quirks, but speed doesn't seem affected really.

  • Toki! I started a chat room for anyone here using XMPP. All of the offical toki pona chats and forums are on platforms I don't care to use, so I thought I would create a room for anyone else in my shoes. [tomo laso](xmpp:toki@inn.treeblue.space?join) Drop on by! I am new to toki pona myself, and the room is young and quiet. Feel free to come make some noise :)

I started using GNOME for the first time after being on bspwm for a few years. I like the minimal, DIY, floating in the void setups, but it's also nice to have something that is usable and looks decent enough out of the box. Also, Pop Shell makes GNOME even better :)

I would say give it a go. There are good clients for desktop and mobile, and even Siskin on iOS is usable enough that I have onboarded friends and family with it. There are tons of servers to choose from if you don't want to self host (which is orders of magnitude simpler and less resource intensive than Matrix). XMPP also has some other neat aspects to it, like pubsub and pep, which things like Movim build upon to make a truly decentralized and nomadic social networking platform. I also like that I can use it for sms and sip through jmp.chat :)

Also, since you mentioned encryption, OMEMO encryption on XMPP is way easier to use than Matrix IMHO. The only time it can be tricky is in group chats with a mismatch of clients. But for everyday chatting with family and friends, I never have to think about it and never have to worry about explaining to someone how to sync their keys between clients etc. The main clients people use nowadays handle it really well.

I'm also running prosody and can confirm everything you said. Prosody is surprisingly lean and snappy. I remember being concerned about getting prosody to be compliant (after coming from ejabberd, which has everything built-in), but it was very straightforward. I don't know if that last 5% compliance is worth it for a self-hosted server. I think an invitations-based system works best for in-band registration, but as far as I know that won't satisfy the requirement of being "open."

You hit on kind of an awkward aspect of this study. IQ is a somewhat overvalued logocentric measure itself, but it isn't surprising that kids with less contact with peers and other adults would be at a disadvantage for that form of testing. Another thing is that, even though development occurs along regular lines with recognizable milestones, there is a great deal of variability in when kids actually cross them (not to mention that cognitive development is not all there is to the picture). IQ is a pretty narrow interpretation of development, especially if we are talking about toddlers.

What is annoying about this reporting is that it makes some pretty general inferences from an IQ measure--the sample size is OK but the population is limited. I have only skimmesd the actual article, but I wonder if they noted like others have before about the effects of increased screen time.

I think the easiest and quickest way to generate an atom feed is by using a simple tool like gemfeed. It's convenient to include in scripts :)

I was using disroot as well. They are moving their servers at the moment, so perhaps that is why? Kind of a vague error on Conversations though.

My mother is a US resident, and recently had to request that her doctor wear a mask when she went in for a checkup. He told her that the virus isn't real, BUT! that it will go away after the election, because it was created by THE REST OF THE WORLD to make Donald Trump look bad so he would lose the election.

It's totally ridiculous, but it's actually quite frightening how Trump & Friends ^(c)^ have succeeded in normalizing Doublethink (like in 1984). It's frustrating and disappointing. Any sort of humane future is turning out to be quite an undertaking...

In its own way, Lemmy is part of that better future for us.

Okay sorry to hijack your thread!
