It's going to be more than that. I didn't lose anyone I'm super close to luckily, but there were a lot of close calls for friends and co-workers and many of them are missing people they know.

I'm also in Henderson County which overall didn't get hit as bad as Asheville, Marshall, Swananoa, and the other areas closer to the river basins. Our local river went about 10' (3-4 meters) over the typical 1' depth (1/3 meter). Places down stream from the dammed lakes got upwards of 20' (8 meters) of swift water flooding.

Those rural areas are also where lots of elderly people go to retire and many of them were unable to get out of their homes as the wall of water approached during the storm.

This level of flooding is unprecedented and many people who have experienced flooding near them were suddenly hundreds of feet closer to the floodwaters than they've ever been. And by the time it has that point many of the roads and bridges they need to evacuate were underwater.

Right now the missing count is in the thousands. And at this point with service restored to a lot of places a missing person is a dead person.

Many will never be found because they were buried under tons of debris and mud as the dams overtopped and filled the usually small streams and rivers with 100x more water than they've had in them in centuries.

Many bodies will only be recovered years from now as areas are rebuilt and the mud and dirt washed into the riverbanks is graded or eroded away.

    Computer dust

    Glitter (conductive if possible)

Small metal shavings from machine shops

    Cat litter

Engine oil (old and used it good because of metal dust in it)

    Super glue

    Epoxy

Basically anything that's a pain for you to clean is 100,000x harder to clean in a clean room.

It also totally shut down the only supply for high quality quartz in the world. Like literally every electronic device that requires a silicon chip is dependent on those 2 mines in Spruce Pine.

It's wild how so much of the worlds critical raw material is still extracted in the most chronically impoverished parts of Appalachia.

There were over 30 near misses between civilian aircraft on Saturday alone. The reason you can't fly your chopper out there is because the "heroes" that are flying there are not communicating properly with ATC or each other and putting everyone else at risk.

I mean. This story is clearly made up, but that part alone makes it blatantly obvious. A military helicopter pilot wouldn't be praising the annoying civilians that are constantly clogging their airspace.

[This is the region that produces 100% of the quartz silica used in all electronics.](https://www.techspot.com/news/102377-two-mines-north-carolina-key-suppliers-world-semiconductor.html) The region is now gone. There is no immediate way in or out and the primary rail line for export has been evaporated. Not only that, but the workforce and community that worked the mines is underwater.

Ham radio operators trying to help connect families after Helene

The star links sucked anyways. Can really only handle like 100 connections before they overheat and they put them all on 192.168.0.0/24 address space so when you have 500+ people trying to connect it just straight up didn't work.

Luckily switching to 10.0.1.0/16 is easy, but most of the people they were handed out to didn't know that. Meanwhile HAM radio just works. It can also support unlimited connections.

Me and everyone I know will be doing exactly that. Asheville getting hit like this is a sign that nowhere is safe from the effects of climate change. Even the places that have been marked as more likely to survive.

Because the unprecedented will start happening and will keep happening more often.

A huge amount of the homes that flooded were well outside the 500 year floodplain. The issue was the dams being overfull and overtopping during the storm.

Due to rain that already put the region at a 20 year high on rainwater.

That and the tornadoes that formed inside the hurricane as it hit the mountains. Something that has basically never happened before. At least not on this scale. It literally ripped while forests out by the roots and dumped them into homes, lakes, and rivers.

Hey, I went there on a field trip in highschool.

Also they have terrible modern art out front. And they didn't get effected by the hurricane. Downtown was basically uneffected. It was the low lying areas that have been lost.

  • I just now got service back. The whole region has been totally wrecked by this storm. Every 500 year flood line was surpassed by a large margin. There's currently no way on or out for a lot of people right now Edit: [Live updates here](https://99kisscountry.iheart.com/) this is being broadcast on FM to the whole region. The only way a lot of people can get info Also [Here](https://throwbacksavl.iheart.com/)

Just got this game, and it's actually really awesome. Stalker mixed with SCP mixed with Car Mechanic Simulator. You have a possessed car that you maintain and customize and use to navigate around a Stalker style zone avoiding anomalies and looting all the while picking up weird radio transmissions and following a storyline with 3 other characters on the radio. The zones aren't randomly generated, only the anomaly placement, so as you navigate a zone multiple times you start to get more comfortable with the roads and shortcuts meaning you can start navigating further out and getting more resources to upgrade your car and base with. So far I absolutely love it, basically FTL but with the loops being a part of the storyline (your car will always keep you alive even if you lose all your loot and it gets totally fucked). So like if you die or get caught in an anomaly storm, your car will just zap you back to the garage, usually in a state so fucked that it barely drives, e.g. no wheels, no engine, and no headlights just barelling metal on pavement into the back wall. You can also pick up "quirks" which are a fun sort of puzzle. Basically any action in the car or any state of the car can become randomly linked to another action. So like opening the back left door could turn your radio on, or flipped on your wipers could slam on the gas. So as you're out there surviving, you'll also have to be paying attention to what you did to make the trunk open, then diagnose the issue and repair it. But yeah, if you're interested in rouge type games this one is top tier. Especially on PS5 because the haptic feedback is really dialed in on this one. You can tell how fucked your car is just by the feedback on the triggers (brake gets stuck, gas kicks back and rumbles aggressively).

If any of you are on his American tour route, definitely go see him. We were his first show and he took a seated show and turned it into chaos then threw out the setlist and just asked what people wanted to hear. Plus he's got the bassist from Radiohead with him.
