I actually have an old laptop with a GTX 780M and a Core i3 3rd Gen running Arch.

When I tried GNOME on it with Fedora, it defaulted to X11 on login when it detected the Nvidia card. However, mine was also an Optimus laptop, and I could mostly always get Wayland working with the iGPU on the Intel. This is how I mostly ran for a year or two without ever using the dGPU.

I need to chuck in a new SSD on that, but I could check it out let you know if anything's changed in recent years. I don't think wayland support for older nvidia cards have even been worked on in the last couple of years. There's work for wayland on newer nvidia cards, but it's mostly still spotty.

Yep I second this. I've been using GNOME, hyprland and sway interchangeably since 2021 Oct on my system as my main DEs. I recently wanted to give Plasma Wayland a try. Was met with multiple crashes, and freezes that required me to long press the power button to reboot to get it working again.

While the new rootless wayland on SDDM worked fine for me, there are several things in Plasma that still don't yet have support for Wayland. I could never get screen sharing to be reliable on Plasma Wayland, despite having the right portals installed.

GNOME, Sway, and Hyprland are miles ahead in having a stable system on Wayland.

I'm currently reading Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper, which is the first book in the Dark is Rising sequence.

I first read this book years ago, and what has stuck me ever since was the vivid use of imagery by Cooper. I've also watched the movie, but it's the book that has always stuck with me.

I haven't used a Mi Band in years. Last one I had was the Band 2, and I found that app much later on its life cycle. Worked a treat for what support it had for the Mi Band though!

This is usually a function that full blown media servers offer.

Jellyfin is the one that jumps to mind with this functionality, however I haven't really this functionality out as of yet.

Besides Chrome, Google’s Privacy Sandbox initiative is on Android to let apps show you relevant ads in a more private manner. The beta started earlier this year, and Google is now prompting more users about it with new Ad privacy settings.

The Search Generative Experience (SGE) that Google is testing out with some users shows an interesting future for the world’s most popular search engine, but one that also wasn’t really showing its source links very clearly at first. Now, though, Google seems to be testing more prominent links in SGE. Since its launch in May, the Search Generative Experience (SGE) in Google Search has been able to use generative AI to enhance search results with summaries related to your search. In a hands-on overview, our Abner Li called the experience “scarily sufficient,” commenting on how SGE makes it easy to ignore source links and just take Google’s answers at face value, even if they aren’t fully accurate.

YouTube is experimenting with a new feature that generates summaries for videos written by AI, but you probably won’t see it just yet. It’s not uncommon to see strange new features come and go on YouTube’s mobile app or website. That’s the nature of a constantly changing service. However, it was only a matter of time before YouTube started introducing some form of AI. Google has made big breakthroughs in the field with Bard and Google Workspace’s new Duet AI feature set that brings the tech into your daily workflow, for the better.

    • What is the Wi-Fi card you're using? Some cards using a Realtek chipset have bad performance.
    • Check and see if the antenna is being obstructed by the case on S920, or if there's anything metal nearby that could be causing interference.

As to how you can go about debugging it, that part is hard. I've suffered from frequent disconnections on my OpenWRT install on a router, and I had to trawl through the system logs (it's there on LuCI) to see what was triggering the disconnection when using the AP. After you find the line you think could be it, Google for it to see if anyone else has had similar issues. Ask on the OpenWRT forums since people on there might have come across it and have a solution.

You should also check to see if a reconfig of a very basic AP triggers the issue.

Google's earthquake warning system failed to get to many Turkish residents before February's deadly tremor, a BBC Newsnight investigation has found. Google says its alert system can give users up to a minute's notice on their phones before an earthquake hits. It says its alert was sent to millions before the first, biggest quake. However, the BBC visited three cities in the earthquake zone, speaking to hundreds of people, and didn't find anyone who had received a warning. The system works on Android phones, essentially any phone that isn't an iPhone. Android phones, which are often more affordable, make up about 80% of the phones in Turkey.
