Your article doesn't mention where these balloons were launched from. I read the same thing about pacific winds going from China to United States. Which means they were likely launched from Europe or nearby, just like pingveno says.

That's impossible because weather balloons aren't steerable. There was just an unusual wind. If it was really a spy balloon, the US also wouldn't have quietly allowed it to fly over Alaska and Canada.

That's just not true. The stated goal of sanctions is regime change. Yet Cuba or DPRK have been under sanctions for decades with no effect in that regard.
