Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying here
  • darylsun darylsun Now 100%

Personally, I wouldn't mind if Beehaw changes forum software. I first came here to check out Lemmy on what looked like a safe instance, yes, but I stayed because I appreciated the calm community. I stopped participating when the Reddit migration happened, however, and Beehaw got more attention than before from other instances, and posters who don't appreciate Beehaw's policies. TBF however, recently I've gotten into more traditional forums, so perhaps I'm biased. But I believe that Beehaw is more than a Lemmy instance.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but people on Mastodon can follow Lemmy communities and create or comment on posts. The reverse can't be said for Lemmy.

  • Hello! I noticed that the original Mastodon discovery thread got deleted, so I decided to create another one. I'll start. I'm [@darylsun@social.lol](https://social.lol/@darylsun), and my interests include open-source software, shounen anime, cozy videogames, and writing. I got my laptop back from the repair shop. They said I really needed to replace the internal keyboard and touchpad components, but I just disabled them and stuck on an external keyboard and mouse.

Then I played Sims 4 for about four hours. Fun!

  • Comfort games?
  • darylsun darylsun Now 100%

Cozy endless games like Minecraft, Stardew Valley, or Sims 4, where I can just get lost in the gameplay and don't have to stress out over objectives or missions.

  • do you like being in the lgbt+?

I like being ace. It does suck that in my home country, most people think asexuality doesn't exist.

  • So what made yall figure it out?
  • darylsun darylsun Now 100%

A friend of mine asked me to take a Kinsey scale quiz for fun, and the result was that I was asexual. Then my friend said that didn't seem right, so I retook it and it said I was bisexual.

It ws only when I met my boyfriend and developed feelings for him that I figured out: A) I think people are sexy, regardless of gender (hence my initial confused identification as bisexual); and B) I don't need or want to have sexual intimacy with anyone, ever. Physical intimacy is fine, though.

When I was still in school, I used to buy physical books and magazines from local bookstores.

I don't think lemmy.one is deferated from Beehaw; I'm subscribed to one community there.

1st edit: I forgot this community isn't on Beehaw.

2nd edit: Here's a link of all the instances that Beehaw is federated with, and lemmy.one is one of them. sopuli.xyz and feddit.de too.

3rd edit: Apparently, I'm Jared, 19, and I cannot read. Sorry about that!

I'm submitting this to Humanities instead of Technology, because I believe this is less about social media and more about online communities. > Because that’s what we have to do. Be each other’s pen pals. Talk. Share. Welcome. Care. And just keep moving. Stay nimble. Maybe we have to roll the internet back a little and go back to blogs and decentralized groups and techy fiddling and real-life conventions and idealists with servers in their closets. Back to Diaryland and Minnesota and grandiose usernames and thoughts that take ever so much more than 280 characters to express. That’s okay. We can do that. We know how. We’re actually really good at it. Love things and love each other. We’re good at that, too. Protect the vulnerable. Make little things. Wear electric blue eyeshadow. Take a picture of your breakfast. Overthink *Twin Peaks*. Get angry. Do revolutions. Find out what Buffy character you are. Don’t get cynical. Don’t lose joy. Be *us*. Because us is what keeps the light on when the night comes closing in. Us doesn’t have a web address. We are wherever we gather. Mastodon, Substack, Patreon, Dreamwidth, AO3, Tumblr, Discord, even the ruins of Twitter, even Facebook and Instagram and Tiktok, god help us all. Even Diaryland. > > ... > > Stop buying things and start talking to each other. They’ve always known that was how they lose.

    > Think about this story in the context of the digital products that are commonplace today. We have apps to cater to our needs in every variety: ordering a ride, ordering a meal, or streaming an entire season of our favorite show is a few taps away. Goods of any kind can be at our doorstep within 24 hours. We don’t even need to go to the grocery anymore – there’s a service and app for that as well. These products provide convenience at a cost we are willing to accept, but what about their intentionality? Intention requires the foresight to think beyond short-term gain to anticipate long-term consequences. Are any of the products that we use today to make our lives more convenient planting their metaphorical oak grove in anticipation for when things fail or cause inadvertent harm?
