    Just found the community.

    Looks like it’s pretty slow.

Similar age, but Canadian. Grew up in the church, but took a tour through some evangelical circles in university. Really forced me to learn the faith.

    Welcome brother.

Here’s hoping we can round up some more folks, and get some communication going. We seem to be painfully underrepresented on this platform.

    Thanks for the suggesting.

She likes Roblox, but I haven’t check out the build tools at all.

    And yeah…the monetization is…troubling.

You’re not alone on TotK. I’m still working on it too. Been taking my time to enjoy it, and the number of hours of gaming time isn’t what it once was.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply. I’ll do some reading on those.

QBasic - what a blast from the past! I also started on basic. My favorite was a “snake” game I had made.

  • Hello Everyone, I’ve got a 10 year old daughter who loves making games in scratch, but she’s starting to run into that boundary where it stops working for you, and starts working against you. She wants to make an adventure game in the vein of a trimmed down “legend of Zelda: link to the past” I’ve looked at snap and gamefroot as potential next steps. Would consider a “true” language like JavaScript or python, but I’m worried she would be daunted if the ramp is too steep (maybe with the correct libraries/frameworks?) The immediate feedback and low ramp scratch offers are still important. Anyone have any wisdom to share? Or point me to something I’ve missed? Thanks —- Update: After some good discussion with my daughter, we’re going to try gamefroot (a proprietary, enhanced scratch) first. She really wants to check out Gadot too. Thanks everyone for the thoughtful comments and the help.

How do you prep in a power outage due to an over-capacity system and the heat/humidity combination is no longer compatible with human life?

a supply of chemical ice packs could work as a short term/emergency response. Use them to survive short term (hours/days) while you leave the area / get the power restored / AC fixed / or the heat breaks?

They have a shelf life, but it's 1-2 years, so you would have to stay on top of expiration.

If your willing to home brew a solution, check out the esphome project. It’s very easy to implement and runs on very inexpensive esp32 boards.

I’ve got something similar, but less ambitious running at my place (temp only). It’s been solid for about 6 months now.

I haven’t had the heart to delete it yet, but I’m also pretty much done with Reddit.

I checked it out on desktop today. Top 8 hits in 4 of my favorite subs were busted bot reposts. It was a short visit.

We do something a bit different. Rather than cash, we get a small toy and wrap it up. (Still in the $2-$5 range).

Still slip it under the pillow.

It’s fun to watch them unwrap it. 3 kids deep, and no one has asked why our tooth fairy does it different.

My personal experience is with Prusa, so I’m sure that will color my answers.

Knowing what I know now, if I had to start again the things I wouldn’t compromise on would be:

    1. Auto Mesh leveling
    2. Magnetic/Removal Print Bed
    3. Quality support

For me, having those changes the hobby from “making the printer go” to “my printer enables me to make things” by ensuring the print process is convenient and reliable.

A WiFi / octoprint is also a nice to have that changes the experience

The prusa mini+ checks the boxes, but if you’re leaning in another direction, hopefully the extra commentary helps.

What are you looking to do with your printer?

I think primary use case really should drive the decision.

The "Best bang-for-the-buck" really changes if you want to do functional parts vs. mini's for example.

I've run FDM printers for years, and I love them for functional parts (which is most of my prints). My prints are plenty strong, and weather resistant (as needed).

That said... I've got a buddy who's just starting and went resin because he's all about mini's. It doesn't matter how I tune, my poor FDM printer just won't keep pace for those crazy fine details.
