It's time to roll up sleeves for new COVID, flu shots

Very difficult to ask this question these days and be taken sincerely but I’m hoping at least one kind soul will find a way…

As someone who never bothered with flu shots (and got a mild flu at least once a year as result) but didn’t hesitate to get the Pfizer shot and a booster during the pandemic: given that the pandemic is no longer a deadly pandemic as it most certainly was in the early 2020s, why are people still getting the vaccines? Is it just to miss the seasonal day or two in bed and be able to get on with life? Is there a danger of the deadly version of C19 returning if we don’t do that?

Again: this not antivaxx concern trolling. Got the jab, all my kids have their shots, etc. I’m just wondering if we are seeing people take the typical flu vaccine a little more seriously post pandemic and wondering if it’s a good idea. I’d never be so blasé about say measles or polio but somehow flu shots always felt ‘optional’ and I’m wondering if that’s changing.

I mean bless you but that ain’t going to happen.

Many of those people need literally years of deprogramming and even then the prognosis is probably quite poor.

What would be more helpful is to give high school kids a mandatory course in digital marketing and communications. Let them literally see dollars rolling onto an account after something is posted online and monetised. No one seems so distinguish between ads and facts anymore. Seent it on Insta? Shit’s as real as the air you’re breathing, to many people these days. Given the opportunity to understand why someone would post BS online and to connect the dots that it’s literally for a few cents of attention I think that society would change for the better.

What’s fucking nuts is you’ll find MAGAS sharing Carlin quotes and jizzing themselves over his ‘all truth fuck your feelings’ approach to comedy. I kid you not, I seent it on that subreddit back in the day.

It’s true Carlin was fucking arrrested for his activism and yes it was to do with freedom of speech but he would have hated the fucking MAGA chuds with a burning passion-that much is obvious to anyone who knows anything about his work.

That is a measure of exactly nothing.

Your post makes it very clear that you have little experience in the creative world. There is no linear measure of successs or quality. You do a great disservice to those toiling with their creativity by making comments such as this one. We need artists, they are fragile things and should be treated with care.

I didn’t start this post planning to get hetup but I do feel that taking umbrage to your comment is fair, if not tautological.

I would encourage you to labour over a still life or wrestle a passable rendition of your favourite guitar riff. Try sing the first phrase of your favourite song in key. Trust me: none of those things are easy.

If you don’t like “Orange” then just look at something else and hold your tongue.

Actually of all the “others” or “out groups” that exist, anarchists are the ones I cannot fucking take.

Irony begin that I’m more aligned to their politics that I am to any of the others, I’ve just never met one that I like. Meta irony being that that is probably the most anarchic position to hold on other anarchists but I wouldn’t out money on that.

Or, you know, kids haven’t got the same grasp of adult life that grown ups do.

I have a 23 year old daughter. She has a job, an education, is currently travelling the world and she’s still really very immature in many ways. I know there be will be people that age right now reading this and hating it and you know you’re really still very far away from really getting this but there is SO much in life that we have to learn to let go. SO many failures of our own and of others that we need to find a way to live with. It took me a long, long time to really get to the point where I was able to forgive the world for being a place where certain bad things had happened. That’s the thing that finally allowed me to keep looking for goodness, to struggle for hope instead of being angry with reality. You look deep into any maladjustment be it drug addiction, eating disorders, rage, pretty much any negative compulsion - deep down in there it’s this. It’s this inability to forgive the world for being a place where bad things can happen. Which is clearly a child-like response to not getting our way. Only now “getting our way”, like it’s not that you were refused a treat but rather you’re waching the bigger part of humanity suffer and realising you’re near powerless to do anything about it. Two things can be true. The world can be a bad place sometimes but it can also be good. If you can’t forgive it for its failings you’ll struggle to see the good side.

Skateboards with no pop. Guitars with shit intonation. More broadly: consumables that wear through too quickly and cause people to nope out of the hobby because it is ‘too expensive’, the list goes on.

There is something reassuring about quality gear because beginners don’t always know or properly understand this stuff.

With that said there is a point beyond which those returns begin to diminish.

  • So after a run in with a moderator yesterday I’ve had some thoughts I felt I wanted to share. I won’t name them here, you are welcome to look at my comment history and make up your own mind. In this instance a user posted some misinformation. I don’t think they intended to, they merely perpetuated a myth, they clearly simply knew no better. I tried to respond diplomatically, they doubled down, other users piled on, the downvotes are plenty and then I responded with an article citing evidence supporting my assertions. I also stated that the burden of proof lies with the claimant and asked for some context on why they seemed dead set on the lie they were aping back, asking if they subscribe to other myth based beliefs, religions, etc. That post was unceremoniously deleted with no notice to me and no reasons given… until the user pointed out in another post that they are the sole mod of the community and warned me that they were “not afraid to ban” me should I “cross the line” in a very *‘I’m the sheriff of this here town’ *tone. Which gave me a chuckle. That’s my side of the story, it’s all there if you want to draw your own conclusions. It really doesn’t matter who is right or wrong in a ‘someone is wrong on the internet’ spat but I did spot a *removed* in the fediverse through this incident. The real point here is that this kind of behaviour is one of things that made Reddit fucking awful and I’d hate to see it flourish here in the fediverse. I don’t have the solutions just some suggestions that I’d be keen to hear others opinions on: 1. No moderation without representation. IOW: mods should be democratically elected. 2. Mod elections should be annual and no mod should enjoy that status for life. 3. There should be a mechanism for inducing a ‘no confidence’ mode election at any time otherwise the communities are likely to splinter into “real_” communities just as they did on Reddit which no community in the fediverse can currently afford. What say you my brothers and sisters and everything in between? Is there a way to safeguard against cronyism, corruption and other frailties of the human ego?
