ngl i thought about quitting it halfway through. It already hits hard if you have ever struggled in any way with misogyny, and for me as a woman in her mid 40s, it was downright crushing at times. It brings aging and towering beauty standards across in ways that are painful at times. It's very well-executed, though, especially if you like Kubrick-style cinematography, and it has some interesting ideas about the relationship between the body and our sense of self.

For anybody who hasn't seen The Substance, Quaid's character is a slimy TV producer who is constantly portrayed as a vile, misogynistic, gross pig in the most in-your-face way possible. You're supposed to loathe that guy and that point is driven home so hard that i would call his character painfully one-dimensional, but unfortunately, his total absence of an interior life that goes beyond hustlegrind and horny is part of why he's such a realistic portrayal of that kind of man. And in the scene shown here, this visceral repulsion is extended to the entirity of the media industry by showing that the entire board of directors is just a bunch of braindead, gerontocratic awooga ghouls.

    major spoilers

BTW, after that scene the main character, who is destroyed by a radical anti-aging treatment that literally tears her in two like a replicating amoeba, mutates into a decaying, monstrous pile of flesh in a desperate attempt to save her career as a beauty icon. Think end of Akira, but with growing tits out of your eye sockets. This is clearly shown as the fault of Quaid's character and the pressure he exerts on the protagonist.

This tweet is "the fascists in Starship Troopers look so badass" lows of media literacy.

  • (CW: Some talk about dysphoria) I’ve got some questions regarding trans stuff as an egg.
  • AcidSmiley AcidSmiley Now 100%

You don't need dysphoria to be trans, but thinking you don't have dysphoria isn't exactly rare for eggs in the early stages. Lots of trans folks learn to bottle up these things - and then often manifest them in different ways, such as somatoform ailments, dissociation, substance abuse or even feeling dysphoric about traits that do not live up to expectations for their AGAB. As an egg, i constantly had some weird pains that no doctor could explain. I spent ages hating my crappy, sparse beard growth, then after the damm broke my five o clock shadown became my worst, absolutely devestating dysphoria trigger until laser solved that problem. Having gynecomastia as an egg confused the hell out of me. Always looking kinda androgynous made it really hard for me to experience dysphoria as clearly as many other trans folks, but in hindsight, it was always there, and it was bad. I spent ages coping with it and it almost ruined me. But i didn't only lack the words for it, it also felt different from what i realized once i finally put two and two together.

And after a couple years of transitioning, i find it very detrimental to define the trans experience largely over dysphoria. I had a phase were i could hardly think of anything else, it really crushes a lot of baby trans, but it doesn't stay like that for a lot of us. Transitioning and living as myself is about joy, freedom, exploration and being true to myself. I'm just happy being a woman, and that's not dependent on how unhappy i was trying to live as a boy. I mean, yeah, that was shit, but that's not what made me want to transition. The moments where i looked in the mirror and could already see myself as a woman where. And when your closest peers are accepting, but you're weary how the world at large will react, you could do a lot of experimentation in private. Even stuff like HRT can be inconspicious for a long time.

And lastly, your options aren't just man or woman. Genderfluidity is a thing, being nonbinary is a thing, being agender is a thing. But a lot of people do not think of that when questioning.

Just checked my kitchen, the store brand peanut butter from German Aldis has around 9% of additives (sugar, palm oil and salt) and it's the only one they stock. This whole comment chain made me look up where to find 100% peanut butter and that ratio of additives unfortunately seems to be fairly common. There are brands that are 100% peanut, but for some reason these are almost exclusively sold in 1kg jars, i guess people who look for that are really into peanut butter. I mean, i am as well, and this stuff keeps good forever, so i may just go big next time i have to restock.

  • [CW: transphobia, suicide] Groundbreaking Study: Anti-trans State Laws Increased Suicide Attempts By 72%
  • AcidSmiley AcidSmiley Now 100%

Sure. A lot of the anti-trans legislation specifically targets minors by banning puberty blockers and HRT for people under 18, forcing students to use the bathroom matching their AGAB in schools, forcing teachers to out trans students to their parents etc. The US in particular has a sizeable conversion "therapy" industry that largely targets minors. Trans kids are also much more at the mercy of their parents supporting them in their social and / or medical transition. If you live alone or with your parents makes a massive difference in your questioning phase. It's a lot harder to figure yourself out when putting on makeup and a skirt (or a binder and a packer when you're transmasc) means you can't leave your room like that because then your parents may see you. Buying these items in the first place may be impossible for many teens, at least without their parents noticing. An adult can usually go no contact with their transphobic parents without being materially ruined by it. A trans kid going no contact usually means they end up homeless. And on top of that, these kids are already aware of being trans at the precise point in their life when their body, if untreated, is changing in drastic ways that cause them massive dysphoria. If they do not have access to blockers or HRT, they consciously have to go through the wrong puberty and see what that does to their body. The pressure on trans kids is just much higher than the pressure on trans adults. Trans youth are an extremely vulnerable population, they just lack a lot of the ressources that people transitioning at a later age have while being in a much more precarious social and psychological situation. Being a teenager is hard enough as it is, but being a trans teenager with an unsupportive home and school environment leaves you little to no room to escape.

And the numbers from that stufy reflect that. The 72% increase in suicides is specifically for people aged 13-17. It is nowhere near that high in any other age group. And that's due to the factors outlined above. These laws and this social climate disproportionally kill children.

When i first read that passage, i seriously wondered if somebody had reformatted a Halimede tweet. I don't want to dunk on Serrano too much here, i've taken a lot of good input out of her works, but this is one of her takes that has aged poorly. Like, seriously, i am *so* fed up with that view of being trans. The one that always, *always* without fail, centers suffering and pain and misery, that can only frame our joy and our thriving in contrast to the damage that has been inflicted on us, the one that can never let the past rest. I am not like this. And it's beginning to become a problem. You see, i like being in community with other trans people. I'm at home there, i've made friends there, found lovers there. It's where i belong. As long as i stay within my own bubble. As soon as i step out of it, i immediately get bombarded with unsolicited trauma dumps, dysphoriaposts out of a 4chan hellhole and a trainload full of internalized transphobia. Everything is a trigger for me. I cannot safely navigate most trans spaces anymore because the people there just drag me down. I logged in yesterday after a long hiatus and looked into the trans megathread and the first thing i had to do was block a user for her unspoilered loathing of the trans existence. I don't know how to handle this anymore. I used to be the kind of woman who writes big effortposts about self acceptance and how to figure yourself out and how to begin navigating systems of medical gatekeeping, but the further i go along in my own transition, the further i am removed from making these early experiences myself, the less i have it in me to unpack all that needs to be unpacked when baby trans yell their pain into the void. And that's eating at me. It makes me feel guilt, it makes me feel like a failure to my community. My second puberty feels as if i get to sit at the table with the pretty, cool and popular girls, giving fashion advice to the prom queen while i'm leaving the most vulnerable trans people out in the rain, the ones that would need my experience and my encouragement the most. But when i try to be there for them, i harm myself. I can't say it otherwise, it is burning me out to expose myself to that kind of pain. It feels as if i'm walking backwards into a darkness i have escaped from. How do i deal with this? Do i retreat to my wonderland of privileged, happy women and girlthings or is there a way to move beyond the triggers and face the misery of others without becoming miserable myself? Because that's what i would need if i wanted to keep helping my siblings.

It wasn't a hostile discussion or anything, i didn't even go full "the kulaks deserved it" (although the mod that single-handedly banned me did go full "the kulaks did *not* deserve it"). I just laid out plainly and calmly that revolutions are inherently authoritarian, that Luxemburg said "the revolution will be as violent as the ruling class makes it necessary" and that there's one Trotzki quote i 100% agree with: "If the October Revolution hadn't succeeded, the world would have known a Russian word for fascism 10 years before Mussolini's March on Rome". Basically the whole "Jakarta Method" train of thought laid out clearly and without calling anybody names. Note that this was on an explicitly left-leaning server that does not allow cops and troops to join. Also after several days of another poster starting destructive, aggressive bad faith arguments in the politics channel until a number of users went "disengage" on her and the channel had to be frozen until recently, when she immediately started being hostile and arguing in bad faith *again*, which got her not one, but two warnings from the same mod without further consequences. Meanwhile, when i defend AES without attacking anybody, that's apparently too much for her to handle. No advance warning, no "sis, you're talking to me as a mod here", not even a notification that i got banned. The best part is that according to screenshots a friend just sent me, she's now completely going off about "authoritarians". The nerve some people have. Sorry for posting pointless internet drama here, i just needed to vent.

The world chess federation FIDE recently made the incredibly transphobic and mysogynist ruling to exclude trans women from competing in women's tournaments, to strip trans men of pre-transition titles and to subject trans people to a two-year long surveilance process that could lead to forced outings.
