City of Tampere original coat of arms

Tampereen vanha vaakuna, joka oli käytössä vuosina 1839–1960.

Vanhan vaakunan heraldista selitystä ei ole säilynyt tai sitä ei ole koskaan tehty. Siinä on kuitenkin teemoina ristikkäiset vasara ja Merkuriuksen sauva, jotka symboloivat teollisuutta ja kauppaa, Tampereen kaupungin nimen alkukirjain “T”, sekä koski joka symboloi mitä ilmeisimmin Tammerkoskea.

This old coat of arms’ heraldic explanation has not survived. The arms show a wavy golden bend for the rapids around which the town developed. The blacksmith’s hammer and caduceus are symbols for industry and trade.

The first arms for the city were granted on March 20, 1839. They already had the same basic composition, but in different colours and the hammer was a letter T, the town’s initial. These arms remained official until 1960.
