I didn't mean to time this one for Orktober, but maybe it's just a happy little accident. He's an obscure Forge World mini from 2007 or so. I've recently been watching Masters of the Air and it made me want to dig him out of my backlog. No idea what I might field him as, but he's a fun sculpt. This crew of Ork-wannabes are my Diggamob. They currently don't have names, apart from the test model - Zagatha (back left). I mostly don't like the old Digga range, but there's a few exceptions, so I went with those. I've no idea when I'll get around to fielding them in Gorkamorka, but hopefully at some point. I deliberately opted for no heavy weapons on the vehicles to field more bodies. Diggas have access to archeotek and can get some very fancy bits of kit - but to find them and wield them effectively numbers are required. These are a combination of GW's original minis from 1998 and Red Nebular's Primal Raider range: https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Red%20Nebular I mainly painted them using contrast/speed paints, but I didn't have the requisite paints when I did the test model, so the skin ended up being done the traditional way. I regret it, but it was too late to do anything about. I'm not overly fond of how they turned out, but hey, done is the best feature. Body is an AoS Knight Relictor. Sword and backpack are from the Black Templars upgrade sprue. Riever helmet. I had to carve off all the lightning bolts with a knife to make it look less Stormcast. More pics in comments.
 
Pretty happy with how they turned out, couple little bits left but they're 99% there!

I'd like to try reading some fiction in the 40k universe and was wondering if anyone has some recommendations. There's a lot of books to decide between so I'm a bit lost. There's also the humble book bundle going on right and it looks like it might be a good deal, but I'm not familiar with any of the authors. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Edit: following the advice in the responses, I got the humble bundle and am starting out with spear of the emperor. Thanks for all the advice! Definitely want to give eisenhorn a read sometime if I can find an epub at a good price.
Blood Angels Assault Marine Thanks to the shift to Primaris I now have an unprecedented number of potential test minis to try different ways of painting! This is a pretty basic slap chop, but with some push on the highlights afterwards. Really quick work, but ended up with a ton more contrast and interest than I got just using contrast/shade/highlight method. So I've heard some descriptions of the 40,000 lore from a podcast I watch, and it sounds incredible, but there's an awful lot of options to start from, with people recommending many different book series and youtube summaries. Is there a simpler approach, like just going into one standalone book to ground yourself before a bigger series? Or from a game to a tie-in book of some kind? Many thanks.
Death Company Smash Captain Almost time to start the new Death Company! Did this Blood Angels Smash Captain up in my Death Company style. With all the gold trim on black armor it did start to look like he might see Horus in the mirror. Still working out the kinks on my photography setup though. Painting my space wizard was a fun little distraction, but genestealers don't paint themselves. I've got my infantry base coated so it's time to give them a good wash. And I've got a little squat that Chris at Ontos Games gave me at BOYL for when I'm sick of batch painting cultists.

Blood Angels Jump pack Chaplain Mostly experimenting with my new photography set up. Still some work to be wrapped up on the base, but otherwise I'll call him finished. Putting the slotted base on top of a modern 32mm base gives enough bulk that I think he's ready to hit the table in 10th edition after until years waiting on the shelf, unpainted. AdMech Color Test I wanted to see if I could slap chop some white armor plating, so I grabbed a Makers Cult FDM print I have had laying around for a very long time. In this light the white plates and the silver gears look too similar, but I'm pleased with the white overall. The weathering was a blast, too!
