Search teams are looking for two children who did not return from a bush walk in Southland on Saturday afternoon. Police said they received a report about 5.15pm that an 8-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl had not returned after going for a bush walk from the campground at the northern end of Mavora Lakes Road at 2.30pm.

There's a convention centre right next door - with no parking facilities - that sees much larger events than the ones that happen at the Court Theatre, and that doesn't seem to have any issues. Similar for the Isaac Theatre Royal. There are over 1000 parking spaces within walking distance. Get a grip mate.

Feeling the need to get out of town for a bit and disconnect - wondering if anyone has some good suggestions (preferably not too far out of Chch/Canterbury) to go and explore for a few days in winter? I've got a 4WD so getting off road isn't a problem. Some of my favourites are the likes of Peel Forest or Castle Hill - any good hidden places anyone is keen to share? 😉

The tl;dr is that zones are basically gone and everything is a flat $2 if paying with Metrocard. I think this simplification will be part of the groundwork they’re doing to prepare for the [National Ticketing Solution](https://nzta.govt.nz/walking-cycling-and-public-transport/public-transport/national-ticketing-solution/) rolling out in 2024.

Looks like we might get a bit around the motu, has it arrived anywhere yet? Looks like it'll just be a bit on the hills around Dunedin.

Darkroom is a cool venue, hopefully the city council can sort out the noise level issues. Living in a central city is not supposed to be a quiet experience.

Hi Te Wai Pounamu / South Island, we have a new mod joining the community. [@quirq@lemmy.nz](https://lemmy.nz/u/quirq) has been appointed as a mod of !southisland, and will be starting to look at fleshing out the details of the community. I know you’ll make them feel welcome :)

If you aren't in Christchurch, check with your local library to see if they have a similar offer.

I'm living in a crowded boarding house and it isn't fun. Especially when 1 room has a couple with a child. Lots of screaming, banging on walls and crap like that. It still costs half my wage and I can't use the facilities most of the time. The hot water usually doesn't work between 9am and 8pm. I'd like to step up and start a discussion group or political movement, since there are NIMBY elements still trying to slow down density. Would anyone care to meet up in Christchurch? It can be a pub or pizza at first.

Yo! I'm from the other island (the better one if I'm honest). I was wondering if changing the display name of each local Lemmy is palatable to the people from there. This would not change the URL, and would still be searchable with it's anglophone alias. So... what are your thoughts on a new display name to Te Wai Pounamu or Te Waipounamu before you get too used to the current one? Or as I said, I'm an imposter so perhaps mu suggestion is not the best or even the second best one. Edit: I have no skin in the game so if y'all reach a consensus, or want to progress this further reach out to a friendly admin

Just felt like making the first post. I'm in Dunedin and it's been chilly, so of course I'm inside on lemmy.nz!
