I've been playing for a few hours and can confidently say that the combat in this game is extremely satisfying, as are the talent and magic systems (it's not exactly a 'tree', more like a well-crafted and balanced list). The narrative is compelling, featuring good humor and very nice writing. There are big bosses and challenging puzzles. [Steam link](https://store.steampowered.com/app/269770/Secrets_of_Grindea/)

There's a lot to writing in JRPGs (story, plot, pacing, characters, narration, worldbuilding, etc.) and some games excel at some of those aspects and not so much at others. It's also a subjective topic. So, I'd like to know. How do you rank JRPGs looking foremost at writing over other aspects like gameplay, visuals, music and so on? You can talk about your top JRPGs, or maybe highlight some high and low points writing-wise or hell if you want to rank every single JRPG you have played in regards to its writing I'll read ya! I did find this [massive JRPG Tiermaker](https://tiermaker.com/create/massive-jrpg-tier-list-600-games-656268) for those of you that want to rank a couple (or hundreds) of JRPGs in a more graphic form. Or if you don't care about ranking but want to share some insights about this topic I'm all ears.

In my life I've seen interesting discussions about which JRPGs have the best protagonists and which ones have the best non-protagonist party members but I don't think I've seen this one. Since "best" can mean anything subjective let us know what it means in your case! i.e some might choose a party based on the writing+design of the characters, others might focus on their character arcs and themes, or on the overall diversity of the party (full human teens party vs diverse ages or diverse species vs whatever Chrono Cross has going on, etc).

Hi all, Just curious what everyone's favourite JRPG is that isn't as big as the usual names? My vote goes to a really early PS1 game called Guardians Crusade (Knight + Baby in JP). I absolutely love seeing people discussing this out in the wild. It was one of my first JRPGS and got me into the genre when I was younger The music absolutely SLAPS and I'd recommend a listen to anyone. It also had a fun mechanic where you raise your companion monster, feeding it and training it which would allow it to take on the form of other monsters in combat. Alongside this was the living toys system where you could collect toys that acted as your spells, buffs and debuffs in battle.

Writing can refer to story, worldbuilding, character writing, etc.

I think about this from time to time, but most recently it's the Persona 3 remake that's got me thinking about it now. The original game was dark, gritty, and I'm really concerned that they're going to downplay that for the more colorful 'mainstream' style in Persona 5. I loved Persona 5, but 3 has my favorite aesthetic, my favorite 'feel'. I'm worried they now feel like the dark blue, and 'gun' motifs are more controversial now. I'm also highly disappointed that the extra content from FES and portable won't be in it, that feels like half the appeal of a remake for this title. I want to like it, but I probably won't.

There is also a brief mention of backporting some of the changes from the console release to PC, although no specific details or timeframe are given.

Hey guys, Figured I would get this sub started. I'm too busy with work to play it and I don't want to check Reddit. What's everyone take on Final Fantasy XVI? Cheers :)

Just to jumpstart this community! Which JRPGs have you been playing this past week? I have been enjoying Trails of Cold Steel II. Although I find CS weaker than Sky/Zero/Azure, I am loving the plot. Not sure If I should play CSIII right after I finish this one, or I risk burnout (I played CSI 2 years ago).
