anime

I now have a full time job *plus* a long commute, which means... more time for reading manga while half-asleep? Huh? Anyway the last thread of this kind was in July, and since then an anime season has finished, so might as well do it again. **For me:** **Manga:** **Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (2005):** Parallel to watching the excellent adaptation, I have picked up the manga and, much like Kaiji, finished it in a concerningly short time. Koji Kumeta has a bone to pick with the world... with *everything* in the world. What arises is a very entertaining ruthless critique. I'm fairly sure he's either still a leftist, or used to be one and got disappointed. However, he is also nationalistic. A political mess, mostly agreeable, sometimes dropping horrible takes - but a fantastic manga which never loses its bite no matter how many chapters you are into it. It's also less horny than the Shaft adaptation. **A+** **√Paradise (1991):** Being curious about Kumeta's early work, I read this short manga of his, which is basically the Yakuza games' cabaret club side-plot in manga form. Not too interesting, but a decent enough read. **B-** **Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san (2017):** Nagatoro is a decent romance manga with a pretty bad beginning. It ended a few months ago, but I have caught up only recently. Not much else to say, really. **B** **Shiroyama to Mita-san (2021):** Nice comedic romance/slice of life manga about two (mostly) uncool people. Fun, but have not finished it yet. **B+** **Anime:** **Aa-Megami Sama (2005):** I had read a large chunk of the manga before, and it's just as fun as I remembered it being. The romance stuff isn't too strong, but the hijinks are fun. The source material being from the 80s means that many of the usual tropes didn't exist yet... or were being invented. **A-** **Fullmetal Alchemist (2003):** Almost done with this show, it's been really good overall. Strong characters and storytelling, and the anime original plot... I can clearly see why it's controversial, but I like it. Good show. **A** **Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! (2024):** The only seasonal I didn't drop. Story-wise very conventional, but the character writing was good. Anna Yanami in particular, being one of the strongest female leads in recent anime history. It had a few tone-unfitting scenes that felt tacked on for the horny audience, but overall decent show. **B** **Western Animation** **The Owl House (2020):** Very fun show, with some blatant inspiration from many recognizable source materials, western and Japanese. King is a king. **A**

seeing this made me just break down crying. if you'd asked me yesterday what i thought of akira toriyama i would have probably said i respected him immensely, but his work didn't hold a special place in my heart. but realizing that he's gone is just devastating. such an iconic, important artist. the world is worse without him

**Chocolate Underground** > With the establishment of the Good For You Party's authoritarian regime, unhealthy foods and sugar have been banned. As a result, the bakery Smudger Moore's father owns is suffering financially from being unable to sell any of their typical sweet menu items. Smudger's friend Huntley Hunter is also frustrated by the prohibition, as he cannot keep a promise he made to his late father. Angered by the unjust world they live in, the two young boys set out to break the new social order—but the uphill battle they are faced with is a lot more than they bargained for. -MAL ![](https://hexbear.net/pictrs/image/0ec369cd-49f4-48af-b4fc-2ba66b3abaaf.png) No

Finished up the Dressrosa arc in One Piece, and might take a little break to do some fall/spooky stuff. Any scary/spooky/ghostly/weird/unsettling anime you like to go with this season? I think the only thing I need to get ahead of is that I didn't care for Ghost Stories after a few episodes.

As someone who hasn't had that much exposure to the magical girl genre yet, I find that I've tended to think of the "big 3" magical girl shows as **Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Precure**, and for a "big 5" add **Ojamajo Doremi and Tokyo Mew Mew** to the aforementioned... But really, I feel like the main determining factor for inclusion in this list is more than anything just that I've *repeatedly heard about them,* and that isn't objectively the same as actual popularity and influence, although there is certainly a correlation. So what would your lists look like by comparison?

It's real fuckin bad. Inb4 capeshit, isekai trash. It's bad for specific reasons, and my main point of contrast is the legitimately excellent Harley Quinn cartoon show. Spoilers for the whole thing after this point but don't worry it sucks anyway. ::: spoiler Suicide Squad Isekai I just watched the whole (10 episode) season and while it starts out fun it just gets worse and worse as the season goes on until I was groaning my way through the last two episodes. Our titular Squad this time is made up of Harley Quinn, Clayface, King Shark, Deadshot, Peacemaker, and Rick Flag. Harley is the best the show gets but she really can't carry it by herself. Her overall attitude and manic facial animation is very fun. Unfortunately, her dub voice is just a standard amerikkkan accent with none of that Fran Drescher voice she should have. Clayface is almost as good as he is in the Harley Quinn cartoon, but he's giving Michael Jackson impersonator more than actor. King Shark gets major character assassination, he's reduced to being barely able to speak. I'm not a manga reader so I don't know if that's accurate to the comics but it sucks shit. Deadshot is fine, doesn't really stand out in either direction. Peacemaker and Rick Flag are the same guy and the guy they both are is a boring guy who sucks. The worst part though is the plot. After a pretty standard setup of Joker abandoning Harley, Amanda Waller sends her and the squad to the isekai world to set up a beachhead for amerikkkan imperialism to set up some classic colonial resource extraction, making this a GATE type isekai rather than a truck-kun type. They find humans and orcs fighting, respectively representing "the kingdom" and "the empire." After beating up the orcs they get thrown in prison by the humans, which is a plot beat that gets repeated four or five times across the ten episodes. In prison they meet a bunch of orcs and also Rick Flag who came in with a previous Suicide Squad. Everybody but Rick has bombs with 72 hour timers in their heads meaning they have to visit Waller's GATE every three days. They break out of prison but then just kind of hang out there until the human knights show up, then go have a meeting with the kingdom's obviously evil queen. There's a fun bit that lasts exactly one scene of Rick having learned the local language from the orcs in prison and talking like a delinquent which offends the knights but they get magical language comprehension in the very next scene. Real lack of urgency despite constantly talking about their time limit. The queen sends them off to conquer a castle in exchange for their freedom which they already had because they broke out of her prison but then just let the knights cuff them all again for the audience with the evil queen. It's a very stupid contrivance to move the plot along. The castle is being held by a bunch of wolfmen controlled by the Ratcatcher who is some kind of c tier DC villain I guess? Anyway, he was part of the first suicide squad that Rick came in with and is now serving the empire. They beat him up and wreck the castle, and the queen throws them back in prison, which they don't bother to break out of this time. The entire rest of the plot has them either on a mission from the queen or in her prison. We learn that the beastfolk and the elves "betrayed" the kingdom for the empire. Was this because the queen was obviously evil and super racist against nonhumans? No, it was because two separate guys from that first suicide squad both had mind control macguffins which they used on all the beastfolk and all the elves respectively. We never get a single line of dialogue from either a beastfolk or an elf they only ever serve as silent mind controlled hordes which can be killed by the dozen. Every time this show sets up something potentially interesting it immediately turns around and ruins it. At the end we find out that the evil queen actually isn't doing a human supremacy and was actually killed and replaced by a lich at some unspecified point in the past so all her evil was because the lich just loves death. Nothing to examine, nothing to think about, just killing for the sake of killing. After they beat the evil lich we get a post credits scene of Joker standing over the corpse of the emperor of the empire they've been fighting all season long. This is, by the way, the first, last, and only time we see said emperor, or for that matter any representative of the empire who isn't an isekai'd DC c lister. Joker says to himself "you're welcome, Harley. Isn't being in an isekai fun? That regular world sure was boring." Which is a sentiment Harley had never at any point expressed. No Poison Ivy, no Harlivy, no emotion, no plot beats that ever mean or amount to anything, just a sequence of pointless battles over nothing. The only real positive is that Harley looks like she's having fun in the pointless battles over nothing. :::

Digimon (Japanese: デジモン, Hepburn: Dejimon, branded as Digimon: Digital Monsters, stylized as DIGIMON), short for "Digital Monsters" (デジタルモンスター Dejitaru Monsutā), is a Japanese media franchise, which encompasses virtual pet toys, anime, manga, video games, films, and a trading card game. The franchise focuses on the eponymous creatures that inhabit a "Digital World", which is a parallel universe that originated from Earth's various communication networks. The franchise was created in 1997 as a series of digital pets, and it was intended as the masculine counterpart to Tamagotchi. The creatures were first designed to look cute and iconic even on the devices' small screens. Later developments had them created with a harder-edged style, which was influenced by American comics. The franchise gained momentum with an early video game, Digimon World, originally released in Japan in January 1999. Several anime series and films have been released; the video game series has expanded into genres, such as role-playing, racing, fighting, and MMORPGs. Digimon Adventure (1999 TV series) Digimon Adventure (Japanese: デジモンアドベンチャー, Hepburn: Dejimon Adobenchā), also known as Digimon: Digital Monsters Season 1 in English-speaking territories, is a 1999 Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation in cooperation with WiZ, Bandai and Fuji Television. It is the first anime series in the Digimon media franchise, based on the Digital Monster virtual pet released in 1997. Digimon Adventure began production 1.5 months after the film of the same name was being produced, and it began broadcast in Japan a day after the film's theatrical release on March 7, 1999, airing until its conclusion on March 26, 2000. It was then followed up with the 2000 film Digimon Adventure: Our War Game!. Both films were adapted and released in North America as Digimon: The Movie on October 6, 2000. With the success of Digimon Adventure, a sequel television series, Digimon Adventure 02, was broadcast from 2000 to 2001. For the series' 15th anniversary, a six-part film series titled Digimon Adventure tri. was released between 2015 and 2018, and a final film titled Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna was released in 2020. In 2020, the series was reboot and released under the title Digimon Adventure. Animated series On March 6, 1999, the franchise was given an anime as the first of the Digimon movies aired in theaters in Japan. On March 7, 1999 they began airing a television counterpart titled Digimon Adventure. 6 further series would follow, but so far not all of them have their own tie-in movies, and the series was dubbed for release in western markets in the fall of the same year. The show spawned card games, with Hyper Colosseum in Japan and later Digi-Battle in America, and more video games. The animated series is easily the best-known segment of the Digimon universe and responsible for the majority of its popularity. "Digimon" are "Digital Monsters". According to the stories, they are inhabitants of the "Digital World", a manifestation of Earth's communication network. The stories tell of a group of mostly pre-teens, the "Chosen Children" (DigiDestined in the English version), who accompany special Digimon born to defend their world (and ours) from various evil forces. To help them surmount the most difficult obstacles found within both realms, the Digimon have the ability to evolve (Digivolve). In this process, the Digimon change appearance and become much stronger, often changing in personality as well. The group of children who come in contact with the Digital World changes from season to season. As of 2012, there have been six series — Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier, Digimon Savers, and Digimon Xros Wars. As is obvious from their titles, the first two seasons take place in the same fictional universe, but the third, fourth, and fifth each occupy their own unique world (in the case of Digimon Tamers, the Adventure universe is referred to as a television and commercial enterprise). In addition, each series has spawned assorted feature films. Digimon still shows popularity, as new card series, video games, and movies are still being produced and released: new card series include Eternal Courage, Hybrid Warriors, Generations, and Operation X; the video game, Digimon Rumble Arena 2; and the previously unreleased movies Revenge of Diaboromon, Runaway Locomon, Battle of Adventurers, and Island of Lost Digimon. In Japan, Digital Monster X-Evolution, the eighth TV movie, was released, and on December 23, 2005 at Jump Festa 2006, the fifth series, Digimon Savers was announced for Japan to begin airing after a three year hiatus of the show. Digimon is produced by Toei Animation and Bandai of Japan. The first five series were broadcast in Japan by Fuji Television, and Xros Wars by TV Asahi. Conception and creation The Digimon franchise began as a series of virtual pets created by WiZ and Bandai, intended as a masculine counterpart to the more female-oriented Tamagotchi pets. It was released in June 1997 with the name Digimon, short for Digital Monster. This device shows to players a virtual pet composed entirely of data and designed to play and fight. In February 1998, the DigiMon fighting game, compatible with Windows 95 and developed by Rapture Technologies, Inc., was announced. The one-shot manga C'mon Digimon, designed by Tenya Yabuno, was published in the Japanese magazine V-Jump by Shueisha in 1997. **Megathreads and spaces to hang out:** - 📀 Come listen to music and Watch movies with your fellow [Hexbears nerd, in Cy.tube](https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies) - 🔥 Read and talk about a current topics in the [News Megathread](https://hexbear.net/post/3311273) - ⚔ Come talk in the [New Weekly PoC thread](https://hexbear.net/post/3468550) - ✨ Talk with fellow Trans comrades in the [New Weekly Trans thread](https://hexbear.net/post/3363552) - 👊 Share your gains and goals with your comrades in the [New Weekly Improvement thread](https://hexbear.net/post/3518054) **reminders:** - 💚 You nerds can join specific comms to see posts about all sorts of topics - 💙 Hexbear’s algorithm prioritizes comments over upbears - 💜 Sorting by new you nerd - 🌈 If you ever want to make your own megathread, you can reserve a spot [here nerd](https://hexbear.net/post/261657) - 🐶 Join the unofficial Hexbear-adjacent Mastodon [instance toots.matapacos.dog](https://toots.matapacos.dog/explore) **Links To Resources (Aid and Theory):** **Aid:** - 🌈 [LGBTQ+ Resource Post](https://hexbear.net/post/279079) - 🍉 [Resources for Palestine](https://buildpalestine.com/2021/05/15/trusted-organizations-to-donate-to-palestine/) - [🐌☕ Zapatista Coffee](https://schoolsforchiapas.org/store/coffee-corn-and-agricultural/zapatista-coffee/) **Theory:** - ❤️[Foundations of Leninism](https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/stalin/works/1924/foundations-leninism/index.htm) - ❤️[Anarchism and Other Essays](https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/emma-goldman-anarchism-and-other-essays)

I'm 5 episodes in but basically the premise is it's OP'S favorite brand of slop, an isekai, where a woman works herself to death and gets reincarnated as the daughter of a magical artificer. She ends up learning artificery from him and invents things like a hair dryer and waterproof fabric (i.e. 'plastic' but from slimes). She ends up engaged to her fellow apprentice, who immediately turns into a total tool, telling her she's "too tall" with heels on, criticizing her hair, her glasses, etc. Fuck this guy, what a nerd. Then he has the audacity to have an affair and leave her- but that's okay, he sucked anyway and she's got a sick ass artificer's tower to live in. He had to pay her reparations, lol get fucked loser! Also she meets a cute knight guy who actually doesn't suck, except he's all "😌 i could just be her friend for eternity 😌" so you know it's going to be a long and arduous journey until they fuckin kiss already (unless they don't and i've just been trolling myself) Im giving it 4 out of 5 slop stars so far
