Taking a break from long otome, so I’m probably going to play some short stuff on I saved as “play later” on my itch.io collection. But once I finish the break, the next thing on my backlog is either Variable Barricade or Piofiore, can’t pick between them. I like the artstyle of VariBari, and I generally like lighthearted things. I hear it veers into drama later on, which I’m also cool with. And it sounds like I’ll *really* like the main character Hibari. From what I recall, I think she’s somewhat tsundere or does denial of feelings, and she’s not the typical “everygirl loser who sucks at school/her job” but is actually a model popular student or something. As for Piofiore, it’s not my usual cup of tea at all. But I know the general idea of all the dark stuff so I’m prepared for it. I’m really just there for hot side character Roberto.

Post idea completely stolen from weekly “what are you playing Wednesday” posts from several gaming subreddits. Don’t want to flood the sub, but do want to at least signal that there’s at least one active user here! When this magazine was pretty much dead, I made a [post](https://kbin.social/m/Otomegames/t/444111/Anyone-still-active-here) asking people to comment and @ me if they found the magazine and wanted to be active. That way I could get the best of both worlds by not flooding this magazine with tons of no-engagement posts, but also still be alerted if someone wanted to interact. I later realized that if nobody on your instance subscribed to this magazine before I made that post, you wouldn’t be able to see it unless you looked on m/otomegame’s instance, kbin.social. Just by first appearances, it would seem totally dead and abandoned, and people would click away. So I guess weekly posts it is for a stream of new content to signal at least one person is active and checking here.

I recently finished playing Butterfly's Poison; Blood Chains and thought I'd leave a review to get some conversation going in here. I'm not sure how I even heard about this one honestly, I just remember grabbing it "for later," forgetting about it for a while, and finding it like a forgotten $20 bill in last year's winter coat one day. Sweet. I'm surprised I *haven't* been able to find where I saw it mentioned, as after playing it I can't believe there aren't certain segments of the internet up in arms about it. There's quite a bit of "problematic" content especially with regard to age gaps, consent issues, and family relations. I *personally* can enjoy that sort of taboo content as I have a good solid wall between fiction and reality, but this isn't an otome for everyone, and I'm surprised people aren't madder about it. In particular, the bad endings can get *very* dark. It's an interesting setting I feel like I don't see much of - Taisho era Japan, when the country seems to be struggling with its identity and how much western culture to adopt. The player character is a girl who's just come of age in a financially struggling noble family, and the story opens on a lavish birthday party meant to find her a good husband before the household collapses. Of course, the party doesn't go as planned, but I won't spoil anything until I warn you (and even then I'll only talk about personalities and content flavors, not actual events). The story is written in third person, for those who find that sort of thing important (makes no difference to me), and the MC has a canon name that's voiced in the dialogue if you choose to use it instead of changing it. As for the love interests, we have: * Shiba, a nouveau riche businessman who's obsessed with the MC * Fujita, the gentle and reserved family butler who's watched the MC grow up * Hideo, a brash soldier and the MC's childhood friend * Mizuhito, the MC's older half brother, a lazy artist who appears to have little care for anything but the company of prostitutes * Majima, the distant family gardener and MC's first crush * Kyoko, an elite businesswoman who's the subject, and dealer, of numerous illicit rumors I enjoyed all the routes, found the setting and mystery pretty interesting, didn't feel like the guys who didn't catch my interest dragged the story down, and didn't regret any of my time spent with this VN. However, I didn't come out of this one with any new figures for the "fictional men's hall of fame" in my heart. I was also kind of disappointed to learn the original JP release was R18 with numerous NSFW scenes, while the English translation I read was a PC port of the (understandably, but sadly) censored Switch version in which entire 15+ minute scenes are reduced to a vague description line or two in which you can tell something sexy happened but see almost nothing about the character of how the guys approach it. There is NO H-patch for this one that I could find (or find mention of), but there are fan TLs of the NSFW scenes online that I was grateful to find. Overall, I would give it a good 8/10 or so since I enjoyed it throughout but didn't get that "special something" that would leave it on my mind for years to come the way some other stories/LIs have. That's about all for the spoiler-free stuff, but I want to end by saying more about my impressions/opinions of the love interests, and **while I won't spoil the actual events of the story**, you might still prefer to discover this stuff on your own, so here is your... **!! SPOILER WARNING !!** ...since I still don't know of any hideable spoiler markup here on the threadiverse. * Shiba is SO obsessed with the MC that several of the routes have "bad ends" that have her marry him anyway. As someone whose favorite LIs are the confident scheming relentless sorts with big fat bonuses for yandere and villainy (note: Shiba does NOT check some of these boxes and I'm not saying which ones), he ended up my favorite. This route is rife with consent issues with a dash of age gap; those who like a good hate-to-love arc will enjoy him. * Fujita was too gentle for me, but others will super appreciate his reserved sweetness and submissiveness. He has one bad end that's *really* not my cup of tea, but it's a pretty unusual one for an otome, so I can still appreciate that it was included. His route's problem content is the age gap as he's roughly twice the MC's age. Those who like to wear down a distant, professional LI until his control breaks will have a great time here. * Hideo... Now, this is the LI I felt the least for, but I appreciated that the obligatory childhood friend route wasn't all sweetness and simpering in this otome as he's pretty grumpy and tsun at the start. This route also suffered by blundering into the big mystery in a way that felt pretty unnatural to me, too. Right, as far as content warnings (bonuses? hee) go... the route definitely still has content some would consider a problem, but I said I wouldn't spoil the story events, so I can't mention it directly... those who really want the gist of it despite it spoiling a mild reveal early in the route should read back over this paragraph about Hideo and pay attention to the first letter of each sentence. * Mizuhito's route was surprisingly bittersweet; there's more to his listless lazy attitude and constant escape to the red light district than meets the eye. He probably has the most character growth of any of the LIs, and I appreciate that. The spicy (fan TL) version of one of his bad ends is *really* wild (and fun, IMO). His problem content revolves around the family relation; I have a high tolerance for fictional squick, but even I felt uneasy when he blurted out the line "I remember when you were a newborn" (or something to that effect). Those who like a broken LI they can "fix" will enjoy Mizuhito. * Majima... Based on my pattern of thirst in most otomes, this guy should have been my favorite. But something about him, while absolutely top-tier *fun*, wasn't as satisfying as he could have been, which let Shiba steal my top spot. The romance almost seems to interrupt his character arc rather than being the goal of it. Majima is enforced by the game to be the last route you have access to; you have to finish at least one ending from each of the other LIs to access his. His route has some consent issues along the way, as well as some other things I wouldn't dare discuss; by the time you get there, you'll know what you're in for. (I will say this route doesn't need any NEW content warnings, at any rate.) Majima's big appeal is, as you might guess from him being last, unraveling a mystery and discovering the layers under the MC's first crush. * I list Kyoko last because the romance on her route is left implied rather than direct (even though it's a very "Sappho and her Friend" type of obvious). She's a very fun character, and I give her a tie for my personal third place with Mizuhito. Her routes are short, and both the good and bad ends are important in their own ways, though I would say Kyoko doesn't have a "romantic" good end as hers focuses on the mystery instead. Only a broken MC can get truly close to Kyoko, and I want to give her bad end the trophy for darkest in the game (of course *very* debatable given some of the other awful things happening here). I go in intending to play another LI’s route for a change, but I end up choosing the choices that I know will set me on my favorite’s route all over again.

I'm going to be on vacation for the next week. I'm visiting family and want to spend as much time present with them as possible. So don't expect any posts from me until next Sunday. Do you like Mobile otome games? I find I can overlook the dubious monetization practices inherent to mobile, but I don't really like playing mobile otoge because I get embarrassed in public. My sister has a great story involving mystic messenger. She was at coffee shop one day with a Korean-American friend when she got one of the timed calls. She let it play on speaker and her friend was shocked that my sister apparently 1. spoke Korean 2. had a Korean boyfriend.

Mine was cinderella phenomenon. I have no recollection of how I stumbled across it. I was *obsessed* with Ouran high school host club as a teen so it probably looked intriguing to me as second time I'd seen a "reverse harem" on a cover. I played the entire thing within a single weekend. Then... I didn't play another otome game until Piofiore came out on the switch. No idea why I didn't. I vaguely recall not being able to find any other free games that were of similar quality, but I was an adult when Cinderella Phenomenon came out so it's not like I couldn't buy things online. Anyway, like many others I bought a ton of switch games during the pandemic and one of those was Piofiore; I've been playing otome ever since.

Edit: I have updated the magazine with a new set of rules I'll still be checking this thread for a few days; I can always update them again. \<s\>As you can see\</s\>, the initial rules that I posted only disallow explicit content. That is a hard rule because I don't want that here. Other than that, I've just been posting what feels like related content as someone who was a longtime contributor to r/otomegames back on reddit. I think it's worth fleshing out what we want this magazine to be in more detail so that newcomers who aren't coming from an established otome community know what to expect. Some suggestions I've already seen brought up: games should have: \-a strong/primary focus on romance. \-majority male romance options \-Option to play as a woman (I also suggest that games should have the option not only to choose she/her pronouns but also to have a feminine gender presentation) Art: only allow original fan art here, not reposts Let me know what you think! Locked female appearing protagonist, can pick first name. One Optional LI. Story: Standard fantasy fare- the art is pretty but imperfect . The MC is a powerful mage who gets a bit blushy for my taste. There is a fighting mode you can skip by playing story mode which makes it a little abrupt. "get ready!" \------battle skipped--- "That was crazy!" They also have only the one love interest, the Prince. He seems okay. The appeal is apparently having that relationship 8 different ways. Is female led an option? Ruling the throne through my adoring husband king would be a thing I'm into. But don't see that they're sharing clues about relationship ending types at the moment. Rated 16+ and planning a Kickstarter? I've been curious about Galen Games for a few months but not pulled the trigger on anything. Maybe this VN will be the start.

I define emotional engagement as being made to laugh a lot, be anxious in a good way, or straight up bawl my eyes out. If it makes me think about the narrative years later, than it is in my top VN. 1. Mystic Messenger did all three multiple times. \<3 Unknown bad ends made me sob for an hour in the base game. Then I bought the after story, got a bad end, and sobbed for another hour. How can I keep failing you my love? v\_v XD 2. Cinderella Phenomenon: pushed all my difficult parental relationship buttons and literally made me reach out to reconnect with my dad. \<3 Rod, I cried so hard at his bad end, oh my gosh. 3. Gilded Shadows: I cried once but it was a good happy cry of relief. \<3 Quill, Jack, Lance & Ari. One route hasn't been released yet of the 9. 4. Akash: Path of the Five. Only VA work I've ever bothered listening to. \<3 Nate, Rocco, and Lux. 5. Changeling: I just liked the lore of the world. It's already so long and I wish it was longer on some routes. \<3 William 6. Oathbreaker 1/2: The continuity and mature themes really touched and impressed me. Having moving scenes where a lover cries in your arms is beautiful. \<3 Virion 7. Animal Lover: This had interesting concepts that were best exhibited by the hamster-turned-man I romanced, Edmund. What is it like to live forever, to lose yourself, to find yourself again, and find what's important about the self. Warning: Character suicide I didn't see coming at all that left me dealing with some emotions for about an hour. 8. Arcade Spirits: depression, finding a passion, finding somewhere you fit in, and fighting for it. The sexy dancer, Teo, was a bonus. 9. Royal Alchemist: I liked that I could pick the femme looking boy and skip the frilly dress and still keep she/her pronouns. I was invested and the story took turns I didn't expect. \<3 Aurelius for making me want to so badly best him at sword fighting. 10. Crimson Spires: The MC is an FBI agent that is pulled into a retrieval mission for a prisoner that was being transported to trial. And then they were like, interesting idea. Let's destroy it with mysterious alien towers and vampires and let you romance the bad guys. \<3 August for making me do the impossible and root for a serial killer. 11. Ebon Light: The amount of self expression as well as affection levels with the love interests were great. I told a guy I needed to think about whether or not we should be romantic. They accepted it and brought it up later- asked whether I had made up my mind. \<3Haron & Vadeyn 12. Love Ritual: This seemed pretty standard but then Dom/Sub moving explicit sex scenes and the plot twist toward the end got me. Woof. \<3 Shanrae 13. Love Spell: Written in the Stars- Sometimes immature, but I adored the mascot best friend there were some very actiony routes that kept me on the edge of my seat. \<3 Florian and Enix 14. Veil of Dust: Focus is actually on your sibling and farming, with LIs being optional side content. Can play as brother or sister. I was obsessed with Stardew for a long time right when they came out, so I was fond of the farming mechanic. And I wouldn't give up hugging the brother. \<3 Laan 15. Steam Prison: Couldn't put the game down because I found the world lore fascinating. \<3 Ulrik 16. From the My Next Life As a Villainess series, we get this Otome game. If I'm understanding it correctly it takes place between season 1 and 2 of the anime. During a perviously unexplored spring break where Catarina realizes she's once again in danger as the events of the fan disk unfold. I'm looking forward to this. I enjoyed the first season but stopped watching because I knew she'd never actually end up with anyone. I'm hoping that in this game we can get some satisfying endings!
